What is the opportunity?

The GRM Operational Risk Team is responsible for providing independent and objective oversight of operational risk management for the Functions segments including HR, Chief Legal & Compliance Office, Group Risk Management, Chief Financial Officer Group and Technology & Operations.

As part of this team, the Associate Director, Advisory & Oversight ensures that appropriate risk mitigation actions and compensating controls have been identified and implemented, supporting the team to demonstrate fair and accurate representation of operational risk exposure.This role works closely with the Directors and Senior Director to support the implementation of the OR framework and risk management practices across the Functions. The Associate Director will be responsible for identifying trends and providing reporting to support the team. This role partners closely with the business to facilitate the implementation of the operational risk framework and sound risk management practices across the business platform, with a focus on internal events, external events, and internal controls management


What will you do?

Act as a leader in Operational Risk

  • Support the strategy, culture and activities that enable the team to operate as an integrated organization.
  • Champion and emulate the behavior and culture to embed risk management within 1st and 2nd LODs.
  • Work collaboratively and leverage the value in the unit and enterprise teams to support the development of a dedicated and involved workforce who are highly effective, knowledgeable, and adaptable.

Support the Implementation of RBC’s Operational Risk Management (ORM) program and practices

  • Execute and provide recommendations on policies, processes and tools for multiple risk management programs, and represent the A&O Functions team at the NFR Risk Forum
  • Responsible for execution of Internal Events/ORE program, including leading 2nd line investigation of large loss events/incidents to assess potential systemic weaknesses and ensure appropriate corrective action; execution of External events program; execution of ICMP program and 2nd line testing; monitor for adherence to requirements, escalating concerns where required.
  • Partner with 1st line of defense on the execution and effectiveness of ORM programs (e.g. independent reviews, deep dive reviews, risk assessments and coordination of scenario analysis) to gain assurance on current and emerging issues.
  • Monitor key risk indicators and material operational risk events, providing challenge where required, to ensure accuracy of inputs into OR profile

Provide Operational Risk advice and monitor key & emerging risks

  • Support Directors in execution of ORM risk mitigation strategies to advise senior management and executives on understanding and managing operational risks
  • Support a strong culture of risk and integrity through effective challenge and deep partnership with first line to promote transparency of risks and matters requiring escalation
  • Support Directors in independent, thematic reviews and/or emerging risk assessments to increase awareness of risk exposures.
  • Review and assess external data (ORX, Industry Events, etc.) to identify applicable events, trends and themes and lessons learned. Highlight themes for team discussion; contribute to EORR pages on external events.

Operational risk governance and reporting

  • Monitor and analyze the design and operational effectiveness of a platform’s control environment.
  • Leverage operational risk data and analysis to provide team and management with insights on OREs, external events, and the control environment to support decision-making.
  • Create reporting on operational risk practices to identify and communicate insights, and partner with the business to enhance reporting where required, to support executive management to build a perspective on operational risks and emerging trends.
  • Develop a story board to provide a profile of operational risk, leveraging risk dashboards, metrics and other information sources.
  • Consolidate operational risk-related dashboards and leverage or data analytics, to support management insights and decision-making.
  • Support Management to respond to information requests by regulators, supervisors, and statutory bodies (as required)

What do you need to succeed?
Must-have

  • 3 years of experience in risk management, good knowledge of financial institution regulatory requirements and best practices related to risk management practices globally.
  • Experience working in a matrixed environment actively managing a diverse group of stakeholders.
  • Depth or breadth of risk management experience (1LOD or 2LOD)
  • Proficient in risk management methodologies
  • Skilled in building a network and maintaining key relationships.
  • Direct operational risk experience
  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent experience
