Job description

With nearly $300 billion of gross assets under management, British Columbia Investment Management Corporation (BCI) is one of the largest institutional investors in Canada. Since its inception in 2000, BCI has grown significantly and is now regarded as one of the most influential financial institutions globally, investing across a broad range of asset classes and strategies in both public and private markets. Today, BCI employs more than 750 people across offices in Victoria, Vancouver, New York and London, and continues to be recognized as one of Canada’s Top 100 Employers, Canada’s Top Family-Friendly Employers, Canada’s Top Employers for Young People and BC’s Top Employers.

The Investment Strategy & Risk department plays a key role in setting, implementing, executing and monitoring the long-term strategies of BCI’s clients. Recognizing that robust in-house investment risk management capabilities are essential to making informed investment decisions, BCI continues to invest in the build-out of a world-class Investment Risk function. The Credit Risk Management team has developed an internal risk rating framework for BCI’s private markets portfolio, including infrastructure, renewable resources, private equity and private debt investments. With private assets representing a significant area of focus and future growth for BCI, the team plays a critical role in validating and providing independent risk ratings for private asset transactions and the broader portfolio.

BCI has recently launched the Investment Grade Private Credit fund, a new strategy targeting opportunities across Corporate Credit and Asset-Backed Finance. As a result, BCI is seeking an Associate, Credit Risk Management with specific expertise in asset-backed finance, including whole loans and structured products. In addition to supporting ongoing transactions and annual portfolio reviews, the Associate will help develop new methodologies and internal risk rating approaches to assess these increasingly complex investment structures. The Associate will execute periodic credit risk rating reviews, participate in live deal assessments, prepare independent credit risk analysis, communicate risk findings to stakeholders and support the continued enhancement of BCI’s internal credit risk rating framework.

The ideal candidate is a proven credit risk professional who brings experience in asset-backed finance, structured finance and corporate credit from a rating agency, investment manager or bank. This individual will bring strong analytical capabilities, experience evaluating complex financial structures, covenant packages and security arrangements, and familiarity with major rating agency methodologies. Strong communication and relationship-building skills will also be essential, as this role requires the ability to work effectively with investment teams, risk colleagues and other stakeholders while contributing independent analysis in a rigorous, disciplined and fiduciary-focused environment.

Located in Victoria, this is a unique opportunity for a credit risk professional to join one of Canada’s most dynamic investment organizations. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to support the growth of a new investment strategy, contribute to the evolution of BCI’s credit risk capabilities, and work on complex, high-impact transactions within a collaborative, world-class investment platform.

BCI offers a competitive total rewards package which includes a performance-based incentive plan, comprehensive health & dental benefits, a defined benefit pension plan and paid time off.
