Job description

Are you early in your career and looking for meaningful experience, strong writing opportunities, and the chance to grow with increasing autonomy? Do you want to build your skills by contributing to high-profile communications and digital projects that shape public opinion and advance client objectives across Canada? Sussex Strategy Group is seeking an Associate to join our award-winning Communications and Campaigns team.

This role is ideal for someone early in their career (2–4 years of experience) who is looking for hands‑on experience, meaningful opportunity, and increasing autonomy in a fast‑paced communications environment. We’re looking for someone who loves writing and is energized by the opportunity to turn first drafts of communications plans, RFP responses, website copy, and other materials into polished, persuasive content. The successful candidate will be eager to learn, ready to take initiative, and motivated by the opportunity to grow while working across a range of clients, projects, and issues.

  • Campaign Support: Support the planning and execution of digital public affairs campaigns, including social media, email marketing, website content, and paid digital advertising, while building hands‑on experience across a range of client files.
  • Strategic Communications & Writing: Draft clear, compelling copy across a variety of formats, including communications plans, RFP responses, website copy, press releases, media pitches, client updates, campaign messaging, op‑eds, social posts, and email blasts.
  • Media & Public Relations: Contribute to the development of media outreach strategies, monitor coverage, and support the drafting of press releases, media pitches, and briefing notes.
  • Account Support: Provide day‑to‑day support to senior team members on client accounts, including research, meeting preparation, drafting updates, and taking ownership of discrete workstreams as you build experience and confidence.
Who You Are
  • 2–4 years of experience in public relations, communications, digital communications, political campaigns, or a related role. Experience at a PR agency or public affairs firm is preferred.
  • A bachelor’s degree in political science, public relations, communications, or a related field.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills, with a strong love of writing and the ability to turn rough ideas, first drafts, or complex information into clear, persuasive, and polished content.
  • Experience drafting and adapting content for different channels, including social media, email marketing, website copy, briefing notes, or other communications materials.
  • Familiarity with website management systems (WordPress, Webflow, etc.) and basic knowledge of SEO best practices.
  • Experience running or assisting with digital ad campaigns (Meta Ads Manager, Google Ads, etc.) is an asset.
  • Strong organizational skills, sound judgment, and close attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast‑paced environment.
  • A demonstrated interest in politics, public affairs, and advocacy.
  • A proactive, adaptable team player who is eager to build experience, take initiative, work with increasing autonomy, and contribute across a wide variety of clients and issues.
  • Strong organization, time management, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Must be able to come into the Toronto office 2‑3 days per week.

If you’re looking to build your experience, strengthen your writing, contribute to meaningful work, and grow with increasing autonomy as part of a collaborative team, this could be the perfect role for you.
