The Alberta Securities Commission (ASC) is the industry-funded regulator responsible for administering the province's securities laws. It aims to foster a fair and efficient capital market in Alberta and protect investors. As part of the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA), the ASC works to improve, coordinate, and harmonize Canada's capital markets regulation.

The Office of the Chief Accountant (OCA) provides expertise in accounting, auditing, and financial reporting to ASC staff and guidance to reporting issuers and their advisors. It is involved in policy initiatives and training related to these areas.

The opportunity

Reporting to the Chief Accountant, the Associate Chief Accountant will serve as an expert resource, represent the ASC externally, mentor staff, and be a thought leader in accounting and auditing.

Key Responsibilities Include

  • Providing guidance on complex accounting, auditing, and financial reporting issues.
  • Responding to inquiries from issuers and advisors.
  • Researching key accounting developments and liaising with standard-setters.
  • Engaging in speaking and networking opportunities, outreach activities.
  • Participating in policy initiatives, committees, and special projects.
  • Representing the ASC on external committees and meetings.
  • Developing educational materials and conducting training sessions.
  • Mentoring junior staff.

The ideal candidate will possess

  • A CPA designation with 12+ years of experience in accounting, auditing, and financial reporting, including 7+ years securities experience, ideally as a Senior Manager.
  • Proven judgment in complex accounting and auditing issues.
  • Expert knowledge of IFRS, US GAAP, ASPE, CAS, and understanding of Canadian and international standards.
  • Strong research, technical, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Excellent time and project management skills.
