Job description

In this newly created position, you will report to the Head of Energy, Construction, and Marine of Everest Insurance Company of Canada (‘EvCan’, ‘Company’) with an informal matrix to the Head of Marine – International in London. You will be a key member of EvCan’s specialty underwriting team. Alongside your peers, you will foster a culture of underwriting excellence, entrepreneurship, transparency, collaboration, and candor. You will support the launch of the Marine underwriting department in Canada and the execution of the department’s key objectives. You will be instrumental in maintaining excellent distribution and customer relationships, driving the profitable growth of EvCan’s Marine portfolio.

RESPONSIBILITIES :

Working with local leadership and global product leadership, supporting the launch the Canadian Marine department.

Assist in expanding the Marine portfolio in line with Company plans whilst maintaining a focus on bottom-line underwriting profit and delivery of Everest internal plans.

Assist in creating & expanding the current product range to allow Everest to compete with the market leaders in the sector.

Monitor and keep abreast of changes in underwriting, regulation, and compliance.

Underwrite and refer risks (as required) as appropriate that exceed prescribed underwriting authority.

Assist in developing a marketing plan whilst maintaining and expanding existing broker relationships, developing new relationships where this is consistent with the objectives of the business plan.

Liaise with the Claims Manager on claims related issues and participate in account and portfolio reviews.

Contribute to the regular analysis and review of underwriting practices and procedures.

ACCOUNTABILITIES :

Alongside local leadership and the Head of Marine – International, formulate and execute an underwriting strategy in the Canadian market.

Assist with the completion and review of underwriting guidelines and pricing models.

Assist in improving the Company’s management information systems, rating models, underwriting manuals, service standards, marketing materials, website, and risk management and claims functions as related to the Marine portfolio.

Participate in the underwriting peer review process.

Be responsible for distribution, business and product development / expansion related to the Marine portfolio.

Develop growth strategy for areas of responsibility and coordination of underwriting between Canada & London and other Everest offices as needed.

Underwrite in compliance with Everest prescribed underwriting standards.

SKILLS REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS :

A person that demonstrates high integrity and embodies the cultural values of Everest.

Minimum ten (10) years of progressive commercial underwriting experience with a specialization and expertise in Marine insurance. Technically strong with the ability to inspire confidence at client, leadership, and regulatory levels. Superior knowledge of underwriting and pricing concepts.

Deep knowledge of the Canadian Marine market. Established distribution relationships with key Marine brokers.

Ability to think strategically and translate thinking into tangible plans to drive the business and achieve objectives.

Deep understanding of the Marine portfolio through the insurance cycles.

Ability to work collaboratively with stakeholders across the Company and geographies, creating alignment and support behind department priorities.

Exceptional oral and written communication with the ability to effectively present key themes to distribution partners and senior leadership alike.

A bias for action with a high sense of urgency, strong work ethic, and drive for results.

Expected to travel to key markets across Canada and occasionally to US / London.
