Job Summary

The Assistant Track Supervisor leads the operations in an assigned territory, focusing on track inspection and repairs. This role oversees activities such as replacing rails, ties, switches, and ballasts, and provides daily support to the Track Supervisor.

Main Responsibilities

  1. Lead engineering operations as outlined in CN’s operating plan.
  2. Supervise and lead activities of track gangs, track employees, and hi-rail operations.
  3. Ensure compliance with safe work procedures, Transport Canada guidelines, and CN standards, policies, and regulations.
  4. Provide clear direction, coaching, and guidance to employees, with regular performance monitoring.
  5. Conduct investigations, recommend corrective actions, and respond to grievances following collective agreements and company policies.
  6. Oversee budgets and workforce productivity within CN policies and the Five Guiding Principles.
  7. Communicate track condition and daily production updates to senior management for operational adjustments.
  8. Ensure track safety through regulatory inspections and input findings into the Track Inspection System (TIS).
  9. Follow up on reported track issues to ensure compliance with standards.
  10. Participate in derailment and service disruption activities, collaborating with Transportation and Mechanical teams to determine causes and prevention strategies.
  11. Perform safety audits and conduct safety engagements with the unionized workforce.
  12. Plan, schedule, and perform track repairs and maintenance.
  13. Respond to emergencies as needed.

Working Conditions

This role involves working both in an office environment and outdoors in various weather conditions, with irregular hours including nights, weekends, and holidays. Regular travel (up to 50%) across the assigned territory is required, sometimes without prior notice. The position demands meeting tight deadlines, handling pressure and stress, responding to emergencies, and lifting up to 70 lbs.

Requirements

Experience

  • 3 to 5 years of experience in safety compliance.
  • Experience in troubleshooting and problem solving.
  • Relevant work experience in similar conditions or in a regulatory or safety environment.
  • Budget management experience.
  • Labor relations experience, including interpretation of collective agreements, grievance response, negotiations, and discipline.
  • Experience supervising a unionized workforce.

Any experience in these areas is considered an asset.

Education/Certification/Designations

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Bachelor’s Degree (asset).
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Certified in Railroad Operating Signals (asset).
  • Additional relevant designations are assets.
