Job Summary

The Assistant Track Supervisor is responsible for leading the operations of an assigned territory involving track inspection and repairs. The role oversees replacing rails, ties, switches, and ballasts, and provides daily support to the Track Supervisor.

Main Responsibilities
  1. Lead engineering operations as outlined in CN’s operating plan.
  2. Supervise and lead activities of track gangs, track employees, and hi-rail operations.
  3. Handle engineering operations including compliance with safe work procedures, Transport Canada guidelines, and CN standards, policies, and regulations.
  4. Lead people with clear direction and goals, providing coaching and guidance through regular performance monitoring.
  5. Apply collective agreement and company policies by conducting investigations, recommending corrective actions, and responding to grievances.
  6. Oversee budgets and workforce productivity within CN policies and the Five Guiding Principles.
  7. Ensure clear communication of track condition and daily production information to senior management for adjustments.
  8. Ensure the safety of the track through regulatory inspections and input findings into the Track Inspection System (TIS) to monitor track condition.
  9. Follow up on reported track issues to ensure compliance with standards.
  10. Participate in activities related to derailments and disruptions, working with Transportation and Mechanical teams to establish causes and prevention strategies.
  11. Perform safety audits for unionized workforce and conduct safety engagements.
  12. Plan, schedule, and perform track repairs and maintenance.
  13. Respond to emergencies.
Working Conditions

The role involves working partly in an office and outdoors in various weather conditions with irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays. It requires regular travel (up to 50%) across the assigned territory, sometimes without notice. The role demands meeting tight deadlines, handling pressure and stress, responding to emergencies, and lifting up to 70 lbs.

Requirements
Experience
  • 3 to 5 years in safety compliance.
  • Experience in troubleshooting and problem solving.
  • Relevant work experience in similar conditions or regulatory/safety environments.*
  • Budget management experience.*
  • Labour relations experience (interpreting collective agreements, responding to grievances, union negotiations, discipline, etc.)*.
  • Supervising unionized workforce.*

Education/Certification/Designation
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Bachelor’s Degree.*
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Certified in Railroad Operating Signals.*
