Job Summary

The Assistant Track Supervisor is responsible for leading the operations of an assigned territory involving track inspection and repairs. This role oversees replacing rails, ties, switches, and ballasts, and provides daily support to the Track Supervisor.

Main Responsibilities

  • Lead engineering operations as outlined in CN’s operating plan
  • Supervise and lead activities of track gangs, track employees, and hi-rail operations
  • Handle engineering operations including compliance with safe work procedures, Transport Canada guidelines, and CN standards, policies, and regulations
  • Lead and coach employees through regular performance monitoring
  • Apply collective agreement and company policies, conduct investigations, recommend corrective actions, and respond to grievances
  • Oversee budgets and workforce productivity within CN policies and the Five Guiding Principles
  • Communicate track condition and daily production information to senior management for adjustments
  • Ensure track safety through regulatory inspections and input findings into the Track Inspection System (TIS)
  • Follow up on reported track issues to ensure compliance with standards
  • Participate in activities related to derailments and service disruptions, working with Transportation and Mechanical teams
  • Perform safety audits and conduct safety engagements with the unionized workforce
  • Plan, schedule, and perform track repairs and maintenance
  • Respond to emergencies

Working Conditions

This role is performed partly in an office and outdoors in various weather conditions, with irregular hours including nights, weekends, and holidays. Regular travel (up to 50%) across the assigned territory may be required, often without prior notice. The role involves meeting tight deadlines, handling pressure, and lifting up to 70 lbs.

Requirements

Experience

  • 3 to 5 years in safety compliance
  • Experience in troubleshooting and problem solving
  • Relevant experience in similar conditions or safety/regulatory environments
  • Budget management experience (asset)
  • Labour relations experience, including interpretation of collective agreements, grievances, negotiations, and discipline (asset)
  • Supervising unionized workforce (asset)

Education/Certification/Designations

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Bachelor’s Degree (asset)
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Certified in Railroad Operating Signals (asset)
