Job summary

The City of Cambridge is seeking an Assistant Swim Instructor to support learn-to-swim programs and promote drowning prevention. You will follow safety guidelines, ensure participant safety, and uphold facility rules while engaging with the community.

Responsibilities include incident reporting, light cleaning, and accurate submission of program records. A Police Vulnerable Sector Check is required prior to starting, with WHSA training potentially obtained after offer.

Qualifications

  • Experience working with children is an asset.
  • Current Police Vulnerable Sector Check prior to commencement.
  • Worker Health and Safety Awareness Training certificate (may be obtained post offer).
  • High Five certification or willingness to obtain within 6 months.
  • National Lifeguard (NL) certification is an asset.
  • Intermediate First Aid/Standard First Aid certification.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with the instruction of learn-to-swim levels as assigned.
  • Promotes public education on drowning prevention.
  • Follows safety supervision basics and ensures safety of participants.
  • Enforces facility rules and maintains order in change rooms and areas.
  • Responds to accidents and incidents with proper documentation.
  • Completes light cleaning duties as assigned.
  • Submits forms and records accurately and on time (attendance, refunds, etc.).
  • Attends and participates in required training sessions.

What you will be doing
  • Assists with the instruction of learn-to-swim levels as assigned.
  • Promotes public education on drowning prevention.
  • Follows safety supervision basics and ensure safety of program participants and practices a preventative approach to safety.
  • Practices appropriate public relations while enforcing facility rules including preventing unauthorized access to change rooms and ensures safety.
  • Responds to accidents and incidents involving patrons as required, including completing proper documentation.
  • Completes light cleaning duties as assigned.
  • Ensures accurate, timely and complete submission of forms and records including but not limited to personal training records, refund requests, program attendance sheets.
  • Attends and participates in training sessions as required.
Experience and Knowledge

Rate of pay

The hourly rate of pay for the Assistant Instructor position is $1 7 . 60 per hour.

Hours of work
  • Aquatic positions are available from September 1, 2026 - June 30, 2027 up to 40 hours/week.
  • Hours will include evenings, weekdays or weekends and are dependent on the number of participants taking part in our programs; as such, there are no minimum hours associated with this position.

This posting closes on March 31, 2027 and applications will be reviewed on an ongoing basis based on department needs.
