Job description

The Algoma District School Board invites qualified applicants to apply for the position of Assistant Supervisor of Payroll.

Reporting to the Supervisor of Payroll, the Assistant Supervisor of Payroll assists with the supervision and administration of the Payroll Department’s functions. Responsibilities include providing assistance and direction to unionized clerical staff responsible for processing weekly payrolls for the Board’s full-time, part-time, casual, and contract employees. The role ensures compliance with Board policies and maintains all required payroll information in the Human Resources Information System. Other key functions include preparation of confidential payroll documents and remittance of statutory and non-statutory payments to third parties.

Summary

  • Assists in and provides leadership for the delivery of weekly payroll services in a multi-union environment.
  • Assists in the supervision, coaching and training of unionized clerical staff to ensure payroll accounting accuracy and correct employee remuneration.
  • Responds to requests for information from employees and third parties through direction from the Payroll Supervisor.
  • Assists in the collection and analysis of payroll data for the annual budget and financial statement information.
  • Assists in maintaining the integrity of the payroll and budgeting systems and the ADSB Employee Portal, troubleshooting problems, identifying issues to the vendor, and testing updates to the system.
  • Assists Payroll Supervisor in the preparation of T4’s.
  • Produces special pays and manual cheques.
  • Processes leave of absence forms.
  • Verifies statements of remuneration are accurate.
  • Solves and corrects pay issues and identifies potential issues that will affect the accuracy of employees’ pay.
  • Creates efficiencies through the review of current processes and automated payroll modules not currently in use.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary diploma in Accounting or a related field.
  • Three (3) years of experience working in a Payroll environment, preferably in a supervisory capacity
  • Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) or Payroll Leadership Professional (PLP) certification, or the willingness to obtain the certification.
  • Knowledge of the Canada Revenue Agency, Service Canada, Employment Standards Act, Workplace Insurance Board and Employer Health Tax Regulations, in the context of administering payroll services.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Excel including pivot tables.
  • Working knowledge of report writer software.
  • Expertise with Human Resources Information Systems.

Monday to Friday – 35 hours per week
