Job description

Assistant Professor, Tenure-Track in Business and Communications

We invite applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning July 1, 2024. This position, cross-appointed between General Management and Communications Studies, requires an individual who can contribute through teaching, service, and/or research. Candidates are encouraged to review the MRFA collective agreement for details on cross-appointments.

The successful candidate will likely teach and develop curricula for two courses: MGMT3210: Business Communications and COMM4501: Roles and Practices in Contemporary Communications. Both involve practice-based teaching informed by theory. Applicants should highlight their qualifications and interests in these areas, including experience with community service learning and curriculum development. Experience in organizational storytelling and teaching communications beyond written word is valued.

New faculty are hired into one of two work patterns:

  • Teaching/Scholarship/Service (TSS): Focused on scholarly teaching, with involvement in research and service. Expected to teach six 3-credit courses annually.
  • Teaching/Service (TS): Focused on teaching and service only. Expected to teach eight 3-credit courses annually. Work pattern change can be requested after tenure.

Applicants should specify their preferred work pattern in their cover letter and outline their research plan if applying for TSS. Both roles require service to the departments of General Management and Communication Studies, which is part of the Department of Broadcasting and Journalism.

Responsibilities include:

  • Instruction: delivering courses, preparing materials, assessments, and engaging with students;
  • Research (TSS only): conducting relevant research within an undergraduate university context;
  • Administration: managing exams, grades, and participating in meetings;
  • Service: mentoring students, curriculum development, and committee participation;
  • Community Engagement: liaising with industry partners and professional associations.

Qualifications:

  • A Master's degree is required.
  • Industry experience in business with a communications focus is preferred, including investor relations and stakeholder engagement.
  • Post-secondary teaching and curriculum development experience, especially in Business Communications or similar courses.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and inclusive teaching skills.
  • Emerging or established research program (for TSS) and willingness for interdisciplinary collaboration.

What We Offer: We provide a competitive compensation package, health benefits, pension, wellness services, and a supportive, inclusive environment that values diversity and professional development.
