Overview

The Cinema Studies Institute and Innis College in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invite applications for a full-time tenure-stream position in Sound in/on Cinema and Media / Experiential Learning. This will be a joint appointment between the Cinema Studies Institute (75%) and Innis College (25%) at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2026.

Responsibilities and Requirements
  • Qualifications: PhD in Cinema and Media Studies or a related area by the time of appointment; demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching.
  • Responsibilities: pursue innovative and independent research in sound in cinema and media; teach and design courses that integrate historical and contemporary approaches to sound in film and media; develop innovative curricular models; engage in experiential pedagogical practices (e.g., technical/aesthetic instruction in sound, work with local cultural institutions, sound-based exploration of environments, digital humanities or research creation methods).
  • Research & Teaching: evidence of research excellence (publications, research statement, conference presentations, awards, letters of reference) and teaching excellence (teaching dossier, statement, course materials, evaluations, and related evidence).
  • Application materials: cover letter, current CV, research statement, a writing sample (max 10,000 words), teaching dossier including a teaching statement, sample course materials, and teaching evaluations or evidence of teaching-related activities.

Appointment Details

Candidates must have earned a PhD by appointment time; salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The successful candidate will be expected to pursue research on sound cultures and related topics across national and transnational contexts.
