Description

Earlham School of Religion (ESR) is a seminary in the Quaker tradition located in Richmond, Indiana, a small city close to Dayton, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, and Chicago.

ESR is hiring an Assistant Professor of Pastoral Ministry and Director of Contextual Education.

Job Summary:

ESR seeks candidates for a full-time faculty position in pastoral ministry and contextual ministry education, including field education and supervised ministry. The appointment begins July 1, 2025, or earlier if available.

ESR is a Christian Quaker seminary of the Religious Society of Friends, with about half of the students and faculty from other traditions. It partners with Bethany Theological Seminary, serving the Church of the Brethren.

Teaching responsibilities include courses in pastoral ministry and leadership such as preaching, administration, bivocational ministry, congregational life, and public theology. The role also involves overseeing the contextual ministry education program, including teaching the supervised ministry course. ESR’s placements include traditional congregations, chaplaincy, nonprofit leadership, and more. Candidates should think creatively about the future of the church and pastoral roles.

Additional responsibilities will be tailored to the applicant’s strengths, potentially including teaching core courses or other curriculum components.

The candidate will collaborate with faculty and the dean on responsibilities related to administration and teaching, participate in faculty meetings and committees, and advise students. Courses may be offered in various formats: traditional, online, or intensive.

Qualifications
  • Preference for candidates with a D. Min. or Ph.D. in pastoral ministry; consideration for candidates with an M. Div. and significant ministerial experience.
  • Must be a member of the Society of Friends or have served in a Quaker context.
  • Commitment to Quaker values such as integrity, consensus, equity, justice, and peacemaking.
  • Administrative experience and teaching ability are desirable.
  • Should serve as a positive example and resource for ESR students.
