Job summary

City of Greater Sudbury is seeking a capable Lifeguard/Pool Attendant for the Recreation Services division. You will be responsible for the swimming pool’s cleanliness, safety and operations, ensuring high-quality customer service and program support.

The role requires multiple lifeguarding certificates, strong English skills, and 2.5–5 years of related experience; shift work includes evenings and weekends. A criminal record check is required after selection.

Qualifications

  • Secondary School (Grade XII) required.
  • Must possess and maintain National Lifeguard Certificate.
  • Must possess and maintain Lifesaving Society Instructors Certificate.
  • Must possess and maintain Lifesaving Society Pool Operator – Level 1 Certificate.
  • Must possess and maintain First Aid and CPR – Level C from Lifesaving Society/Red Cross/St. John’s Ambulance or Canadian Ski Patrol.
  • Two and a half to five (2½) years of related experience.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the cleanliness, safety and security, and operation of the Swimming Pool.
  • Ensure the provision of exemplary services to all customers.
  • Provide recommendations to the Facility Pool Operator regarding changes to programs to meet customer needs.
  • Responsible for pool maintenance and testing in accordance with the Public Health Act.
  • Inspect and ensure maintenance of all equipment in the Swimming Pool; monitor mechanical room and filter room as part of regularly scheduled maintenance program.
  • Act as a cashier when required by accepting the appropriate fee and issuing tickets/stamps; secure cash at the end of shift.
  • Project a good corporate image when interacting with the public, or any outside agency or organization.
  • Ensure conformance to CGS By-Laws, policies and procedures that govern the Swimming Pool and its Employees.
  • Teach swimming, aquacises, and perform Lifeguard duties, as required.
  • Assist in the scheduling, training, developing and monitoring of facility staff performance.
  • Ensure front entrance and exit doors are clear of snow for public usage (Winter).
  • Develop and maintain knowledge of CGS’s Safety Manual and Provincial Legislation.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Estimated Probable Duration: Seven (7) Months (may be extended)

Hours of Work: Up to 48 hours bi-weekly
Shift Work Required:Yes - Some evenings and weekends
Range of Pay: Group 8 - $29.72 to $34.49 per hour

Characteristic: Under the direct supervision of the Recreation Co-ordinator or the Recreation Centre Co-ordinator and Aquatic Trainer.

Qualifications
Education and Training
  • Successful completion of Secondary School (Grade XII) Education.
  • Must possess and maintain a current National Lifeguard Certificate.
  • Must possess and maintain a current Lifesaving Society Instructors Certificate.
  • Must possess and maintain a current Lifesaving Society Pool Operator – Level 1 Certificate.
  • Must possess and maintain a current First Aid and C.P.R. – Level C Certificate from one of the following agencies: Lifesaving Society, Red Cross, St. John's Ambulance or Canadian Ski Patrol.
Experience
  • Two and one-half (2½) years to five (5) years of related experience.
Other Requirements
  • Knowledge in Aquatic activities.
  • Demonstrate leadership abilities and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrate ability in scheduling, co-ordination/organizing and ensuring continuity of program/events within time and budget restrictions.
  • Demonstrate ability to work co-operatively, efficiently and effectively alongside peers and superiors.
  • Ability to maintain pleasant and effective relations with internal and external contacts under difficult circumstances.
  • Excellent use of English; verbally and in writing.
  • French verbal and written skills an asset.
  • Satisfactory health, attendance and former employment history.
  • Provide, at own cost, a Criminal Reference Check.
