ASSISTANT PLANS EXAMINER
(Temporary, Full-Time – Approximately 12 months)

The West Vancouver Permits & Inspections Department is currently seeking a temporary full-time Assistant Plans Examiner, this position will be responsible for examining and checking plans and permit applications relating to single and duplex residential buildings. The successful candidate will exercise considerable independence of judgement and action in the technical aspects of the work, referring more difficult or unusual problems to a superior.
The Preferred Candidate Will Be Required To
- Coordinate the processing of building permit applications through relevant municipal departments; ensure all necessary approvals and recommendations are obtained; prepare building permits for issuance and calculate permit fees from prepared schedules of costs;
- check building permit applications and plans for single-family dwellings and duplexes for compliance with building, zoning and bylaw regulations; suggest changes to ensure compliance; assist with work related to condominium, apartments and small commercial buildings;
- prepare correspondence and reports relating to application procedures, municipal requirements and regulations; maintain various records, files and maps;
- respond to inquiries from the public on application procedures, bylaws, building codes and other regulations; deal with complaints regarding building, zoning, bylaw and projects;
- check and process demolition, sign and plumbing permits; and issue as appropriate;
- liaise with architects, engineers, contractors and homeowners; issue building permits when necessary requirements have been met;
- ensure proposals comply with the requirements of the BC Building Code, municipal regulations and bylaws;
- perform related work as required.
The successful candidate will have completion of Grade 12 plus some related experience in the building construction industry or municipal field, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Knowledge of applicable sections of the Building Code and municipal regulations, permits and bylaws is an asset. A BCIT diploma in Building Technology would also be an asset.
The successful candidate will be required to supply a police information check and a copy of their credentials.
