Description

The University of Northern British Columbia invites applications for a tenure-track position in the Department of Ecosystem Science & Management at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, with a proposed starting date of July 1, 2025. UNBC is committed to fostering an inclusive and transformative learning environment, valuing high-quality teaching and scholarship.

The Department oversees BSc undergraduate degrees in Biology; Conservation Science & Practice; Forest Ecology & Management; and Wildlife & Fisheries, as well as a BA in Nature-based Tourism Management. Faculty supervise graduate students (Masters and Doctoral) within the Natural Resources and Environmental Studies (NRES) Graduate Program.

We seek candidates who will develop a vigorous, externally funded, long-term research program in the specified areas. UNBC values interdisciplinarity, offering opportunities for collaboration across the university, with national and international colleagues, conservation groups, First Nations, government, and industry.

This position will contribute to delivering key courses supporting our Forest Ecology & Management, Wildlife & Fisheries, and Conservation Science & Practice degree programs. The successful candidate will teach both lower and upper division courses on Aboriginal and/or Indigenous ways of knowing and being on the land, resource management, and integrating traditional knowledge from First Nations, Métis, and Inuit cultures. Courses on policy and practice in forest ecology/management that incorporate Indigenous knowledge and pedagogy will also be part of the responsibilities.

Preference will be given to applicants with backgrounds and research interests in forest biology, forest practices, land resource management, ecology, botany, and/or traditional ecological knowledge. Candidates are expected to supervise undergraduate and graduate research.

Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in Forestry, Biology, Resource Management, or a closely related discipline. Ideally, candidates will have post-doctoral and/or professional experience, demonstrated university-level teaching, and established connections with Indigenous communities. A growing record of scholarly activity and a commitment to teaching excellence are essential.
