Marketing and Category Controller

About the role

We seek an analytical, resourceful individual with excellent organizational and communication skills. The role involves providing reliable, timely, and accurate financial information for management decision-making and leading internal control assessments across the Canadian organization. These responsibilities are key to growing our business and maintaining our competitive advantage with moms and consumers.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Business Controls
    • Lead internal control assessments and procedures organization-wide.
    • Perform internal control reviews to prevent audit infractions, including year-end assessments.
    • Create and update control documentation as needed.
    • Address deficiencies and develop remedial plans.
  2. Financial Planning/Reporting/Analysis
    • Manage accounting, compliance, planning, control, and reporting activities related to Marketing, Shopper Marketing, hospital care sales, and National Coupon for Nutrition in Canada.
    • Provide tools for budget input and reporting at the project, brand, and expense levels.
    • Oversee budget roll-up, forecasting, and system uploads.
    • Validate forecasts through estimates and contracts.
    • Publish monthly status reports and summaries, following up on outstanding issues.
    • Conduct monthly meetings with budget owners for updates and visibility.
    • Partner with Marketing leadership to maintain marketing funding balances.
    • Share best practices and challenge vendors and marketing teams for investment optimization.
    • Review general ledger accounts, perform reconciliations, and prepare journal entries related to marketing costs and coupons.
    • Assist with month-end closing and reporting to corporate.
    • Support marketing and retail teams with PO creation, coupon tracking, WBS setup, and spend coaching.
    • Collaborate with marketing to align budgets, strategies, and KPIs (SOV, ROI), ensuring compliance.
  3. Productivity Finance Assistant
    • Support productivity project status and financial tracking.
    • Conduct monthly meetings with initiative owners and stakeholders.
    • Prepare monthly reports for global, North American, and local leadership on performance, forecasts, and risks.
  4. Other
    • Handle ad hoc projects as needed.

Experience required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Commerce or similar; MBA or CPA preferred.
  • 5-7 years in finance/accounting, preferably in CPG or similar industry.
  • Experience with SAP ERP is a plus.
  • Proven ability to develop processes, assess controls, and work in a professional environment.
  • Knowledge of accounting principles, internal controls, and financial analysis.
  • Proficiency in SAP, Excel, and data analysis.
  • Agile, independent, and team-oriented mindset with strong ownership skills.
