JOB SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Manager of Finance, the Assistant Manager of Finance provides leadership and direction to the Finance and Payroll departments of the Board. This position offers an excellent benefits package, 5+ weeks vacation, a hybrid work schedule with flexible hours, and more!

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Provide oversight and leadership to two operating areas with varying duties and focuses: Payroll and Finance.
  2. Collaborate with the Finance team, Human Resources, and Payroll Officers to support payroll functions.
  3. Responsible for payroll forecasting, variance reporting, and bi-weekly updates to the Manager of Finance regarding potential concerns.
  4. Handle Sick Leave Benefit Reporting (SBT) for year-end financials and absence studies.
  5. Assist in preparing the Board’s annual budget estimates, revised estimates, and financial statements in accordance with PSAB standards, including understanding and applying Grants for Student Needs and Responsive Education Programs (REP) grants.
  6. Review department budgets.
  7. Supervise daily payroll and accounting activities, ensuring compliance with policies and procedures.
  8. Develop and monitor internal controls for accounting and purchasing processes, ensuring transactions comply with legislation, Ministry protocols, and Board policies.
  9. Assist senior staff, managers, and employees with financial data analysis, report production, training, and communication.
  10. Perform other duties as assigned, consistent with the job summary and responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Five years of related experience in a computerized financial environment, including two years in a leadership role.
  2. University degree in Commerce, Business Administration, or related field.
  3. CPA designation (formerly CGA, CMA, or CA).
  4. Supervisory experience in a unionized environment.
  5. Excellent interpersonal, communication, presentation, and negotiation skills, with a commitment to client service.
  6. Strong time management and organizational skills, with the ability to work under pressure.
  7. Thorough understanding of business processes for developing internal controls and procedures.
  8. Proficiency with GAAP and PSAB accounting standards.
  9. Advanced skills in financial and purchasing software, including Microsoft Word, Excel, databases, and email.
  10. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills.
