Position Summary
BCIT’s School of Construction and the Environment is seeking a regular, full-time (1.0 FTE ) Assistant Instructor, Civil Engineering who is an enthusiastic, team-oriented professional. The Assistant Instructor must have a strong commitment to teaching and interacting with students and an ability to communicate clearly and effectively. Additionally, the Assistant Instructor is expected to participate in continuous program improvement and administration, including outreach and accreditation.
The department of Civil Engineering at BCIT offers a four-year Bachelor of Engineering degree program accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board. The comprehensive program also allows students to exit with a nationally recognized Diploma of Technology after two years of study. The primary goal of the program is to graduate highly qualified, practically oriented civil technologists and engineers eligible for professional registration. In part, this is achieved through faculty’s excellent ties to industry. Graduates have an excellent record of employment and advancement in the diverse civil engineering industry in B.C. and elsewhere.
Duties & Responsibilities
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES :
- Assist in instructing courses including but no limited to courses in construction materials, structural engineering, and water resource engineering
- Demonstrate and give practical instruction in a laboratory or field setting
- Operate and maintain civil engineering laboratories and testing equipment in areas relating to structures, soil mechanics, materials testing, hydraulics and related environmental considerations
- Assist in the marking of assignments
- Install, test and calibrate instrumentation, data acquisition and control systems
- Utilize NI LabView software/hardware for laboratory testing
- Provide laboratory support to classroom and research activities including setup and take-down of various scheduled lab sessions
- Order materials and consumables necessary for operation of the laboratory facilities
- Work with common machining/workshop tools
- Devise and construct models to demonstrate engineering principles
- Be actively involved in maintaining and improving safety standards in all Civil Engineering Labs.
- Provide a safe and inclusive learning environment
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS :
- A Diploma of Technology or Bachelor’s Degree related to civil engineering
- Demonstrated strong instructional skills, communication skills, interpersonal skills and problem solving skills
- Knowledge of and experience with instrumentation and calibration
- Post-secondary teaching experience an asset
