Description: The Assistant Head Nurse (AHN) provides effective clinical leadership, functional supervision and, as needed, performs front line Registered Nursing duties. The AHN promotes and models leadership competencies by demonstrating good judgement and critical thinking skills, and developing and maintaining strong nursing practice in the designated scope of practice. The AHN fosters team effectiveness, demonstrating excellent interpersonal and leadership skills, communicating effectively and seeking to resolve staff issues. The AHN develops a supportive environment for multidisciplinary learning. This position is covered by the terms and conditions of the UNA Collective Agreement.
Required Qualifications: Graduate of a Registered Nurse program or recognized equivalent required. Active registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) or College of Registered Psychiatric Nurse of Alberta (CRPNA) is required. Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider (Level C) required.
Additional Required Qualifications: At least 1.5 years of recent (within the last two years) and related inpatient surgical nursing experience (general surgery/orthopedic surgery) is required. At least 6 months of recent (within the last year) and related inpatient surgical charge nurse experience is required. Must be able to independently take a patient assignment as required and respond to a code blue or rapid response. Must stand for long periods and walk for extended periods of time shift. Regularly required to lift in excess of ten (10) pounds. Must have excellent problem-solving skills and communication skills (written and verbal). Must be proficient working in a computerized environment including MS Office Suite. Committed to safe, effective and ethical patient care and work practices. Must stand for long periods and walk for extended periods of time shift. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Excellent organizational skills.

Able to deescalate situations and have strong conflict resolution skills. Ability to participate as an effective member of and lead the multidisciplinary team.
