Job summary

United States Digital Space LLC in Toronto is seeking an experienced Assistant General Counsel to support regulatory and product counsel efforts for crypto products and services. This role partners with product and compliance teams on launches and ongoing guidance, requiring strong relationship-building in a fast-paced environment.

The role is based in Toronto with in-person attendance required at least 3 days per week, supporting a mission to democratize finance for all.

Qualifications

  • J.D. degree from a Canadian law school.
  • Bar admission in at least one Canadian province or territory, in good standing.
  • 7+ years of relevant work experience at a law firm, government, technology, financial services, brokerage or fintech.
  • Experience with crypto, securities, derivatives, money transmission, and/or sanctions.
  • Exceptional communication skills and ability to drive cross-functional alignment.
  • Motivated, modest, determined and innovative.

Responsibilities

  • Provide end-to-end counseling on retail cryptocurrency products and services with cross-functional partners.
  • Respond promptly to legal requests and coordinate with internal and outside counsel to deliver timely advice.
  • Identify regulatory risks and mitigate them while achieving product goals.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Advise on Canadian crypto regulatory developments.
  • Engage with Canadian regulators and self-regulatory organizations.
  • Develop trusted relationships to facilitate coordinated product launches.
  • Be a proactive product partner, not just a legal advisor.
  • Pitch in on miscellaneous legal work as needed.

We are looking for an experienced and innovative attorney to join our regulatory and product counsel team as Assistant General Counsel, reporting to the Senior Director and Deputy General Counsel, Crypto at the company. In this role, you’ll partner directly with our product and compliance teams on product launches and provide legal counsel to them on an ongoing basis. The successful candidate will be an engaged and resourceful self-starter, comfortable working in a fast-paced and dynamic environment, and excellent at building strong relationships. What you’ll do
  • Provide end-to-end counseling on a range of retail cryptocurrency products and services, collaborating with colleagues and cross-functional stakeholders across the company
  • Respond promptly to a wide range of sophisticated legal requests and coordinate closely with internal stakeholders and outside counsel to deliver practical, timely and high-quality advice
  • Identify and assess legal and regulatory risks, and find creative ways to mitigate them while achieving product goals
  • Ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations
  • Advise on legal and regulatory developments related to cryptocurrency in Canada
  • Engage directly with Canadian securities regulators and self-regulatory organizations on matters of compliance and innovation
  • Develop trusted relationships to facilitate a coordinated team approach to launching new products and features
  • Be a business partner and think like a proactive product owner, not just a legal advisor
  • Pitch in on whatever legal work needs doing, whenever it needs to be done
What you bring
  • J.D. degree from an law school accredited by the Federation of Law Societies of Canada
  • Membership in at least 1 Canadian province or territory bar, with good standing
  • 7+ years of relevant work experience at a law firm, government agency and/or technology, financial services, brokerage or fintech company
  • Experience with legal and regulatory requirements applicable to crypto, securities, derivatives, money transmission, and/or sanctions
  • Extraordinary interpersonal and communication skills and phenomenal ability to communicate information effectively internally and externally, including to non-legal audiences, and to drive cross-functional alignment and action
  • A motivated approach with the modesty, determination, and innovation to accomplish tasks

In addition to the base pay range listed below, this role is also eligible for bonus opportunities + equity + benefits.

Base pay for the successful applicant will depend on a variety of job-related factors, which may include education, training, experience, location, business needs, or market demands. The expected base pay range for this role is based on the location where the work will be performed.
