Reporting to the Financial Controller, the Assistant Controller is responsible for supporting the financial controllership of the Bermuda jurisdiction. This position is responsible for the accuracy and timely preparation of Bermuda's financial records, and the preparation of financial data in compliance with Group Accounting policies under US GAAP to a SOX-compliant level. The incumbent with also be responsible for preparing monthly variance analysis and reconciliations, as well as assisting the Bermuda Head of Finance in preparing budgets and forecasts.
About the Team
The Finance team plays an important role in supporting Butterfield’s businesses by providing high quality planning, reporting, regulatory and accounting services. It’s a fast-paced environment with a global remit. Working with colleagues across the Bank, the Finance team provides senior management with the expertise required to measure the Bank’s performance and shape Butterfield’s future plans.
Your responsibilities will include:
• Supporting the monthly close process by preparing and/or reviewing monthly journal entries and account reconciliations required for accurate reporting, and ensuring completion of the monthly closing working paper files to a SOX-compliant level.
• Preparing monthly financial variance reports and assisting the Financial Controller and Bermuda Head of Finance with annual budgets and ongoing financial forecasts.
• Collaborating with the Financial Controller and Bermuda Head of Finance to ensure departmental procedures are up to date and that strong internal controls are in place over the production of the Bermuda financial data.
• Recommending, drafting, and implementing changes to ensure efficiency in processes and practices within Bermuda Finance.
• Assisting with the external audit, including the preparation of audit working paper files.
• Completing special projects and ad-hoc reporting as assigned.
Your qualifications and skills include:
• Currently pursuing an accounting designation (CPA, CA or equivalent) with a minimum of five years’ accounting experience.
• Direct banking experience with strong understanding of banking products would be considered an asset.
• Experience working in a SOX control environment.
• Strong management, communication, and mediation skills.
• Strong computer skills in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, as well as database applications.
• Extensive knowledge of SAP or similar General Ledger system.
• Strong understanding of integrated complex systems and associated interfaces.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to multi-task and prioritize
• Strong attention to detail, high ethical standards, and the ability to build trusting relationships.
• Efficient time management skills and ability to meet tight deadlines, including working outside of normal hours and on weekends, and statutory holidays when required.
• Ability to handle sensitive situations and confidential information with absolute discretion.
• Experience working in a fast paced, high-performance environment with a frequent need to adapt to change and implement new processes, procedures, and controls with a customer service focus.
