Overview

Job Title: Assistant Editor


Department(s): HarperCollins Canada - Editorial


Status: Regular Full Time


Location: 22 Adelaide Street West, Toronto


Reporting to the Senior Vice-President & Executive Publisher, and offering support to the Editor in Chief, this role provides both editorial and administrative support.


Responsibilities

Editorial Responsibilities (20%)
  • Provides editorial support to the SVP, Publisher of HCC, including preparing draft revision and rejection letters, evaluating book suitability, assisting with first reads, author revisions, and corresponding with authors and agents.
  • Contributes to the HCC program by offering editorial opinions on potential acquisitions, preparing title sheets and metadata, writing cover and flap copy, and assisting with cover concepts.
  • Processes submissions within HCC guidelines, logs and distributes them, and forwards to appropriate editors.
  • Takes and circulates meeting minutes, prepares memos, and displays covers for discussion.
  • Participates in departmental meetings and presents new projects as requested.
Administrative Responsibilities (75%)
  • Provides administrative support such as creating reports, maintaining file systems, booking meetings, and managing requests for manuscripts and materials.
  • Archives records periodically, processes expense reports, and organizes author events.
  • Supervises editorial interns if applicable, manages the Philanthropy/Donations budget, and routes various documents to production.
  • Inputs data into the Biblio system and manages various publishing-related tasks.
Special Projects (5%)
  • Prepares slideshows for meetings and presentations.
Qualifications
  • Creativity, enthusiasm, and a love of books.
  • 1-3 years of publishing experience.
  • Post-secondary education in a related field; Publishing Program Certificate is an asset.
  • Knowledge of the Canadian publishing industry, attention to detail, proficiency in Microsoft Office, and strong communication skills.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, and work under pressure.
