Job summary

Camp Kandalore in Ontario is seeking an Assistant Director – Program Operations to lead year-round and summer camp programs. You will manage program preparation, budgets, risk management, staff recruitment, and training, while ensuring high-quality camper experiences.

During the off-season, you prepare program areas for summer, coordinate staff qualifications, and support marketing and alumni initiatives. In summer, you oversee program leaders and ensure safe, engaging activities for campers.

Founded in 1947, Kandalore has long been regarded as one of the leading traditional summer camps in Canada providing the best of both canoetripping and in-camp activities. The Camp prides itself on its warm and supportive community where children are made to feel included in the campculture. The supportive nature of the camp allows for the campers to try newactivities and develop new skills with the help of caring staff members.Kandalore operates as a summer camp in the summer months and an OutdoorEducation Centre hosting school groups from September to June.

JobSummary

Reporting to the Summer Camp Director, the AssistantDirector – Program Operations provides year-round leadership for Kandalore’s summercamp program. The role is responsible for program preparation, curriculum andequipment, risk management, staff recruitment and training, program budgets,special programs, and the supervision and support of key summer programleaders.

During the off-season, the Assistant Director – ProgramOperations prepares Kandalore’s program areas for the upcoming summer,coordinates staff qualifications and training, supports tripping preparation,and contributes to marketing, alumni engagement, and other seasonalinitiatives. During the summer, the role provides direct oversight of programleaders and activity areas, supports safe and effective program delivery, andhelps ensure that campers and staff experience a well-prepared, high-quality program.

KeyResponsibilities
  • Oversee summer program preparation, including equipmentpurchasing recommendations, supplier relationships, inventories, programbudgets, and activity resources.
  • Develop and maintain program-area risk management plansand ensure ongoing risk assessments are completed across activities.
  • Review, develop, and update activity lesson plans,curriculum, and program initiatives.
  • Support the recruitment, interviewing, hiring, placement,and management of seasonal staff
  • Organize summer staff certification and qualificationrequirements, including training courses, reimbursement processes, andqualification records.
  • Plan and facilitate Senior Staff Training Week and StaffTraining Week in collaboration with other Directors.
  • Work with program leaders to ensure activity programming,equipment, supplies, records, and camper progression materials are prepared andmaintained throughout the summer.
  • Support program safety by monitoring activity areas and helping organize andoversee emergency procedures.
  • Support the development and delivery of special events andseasonal programs, including Winter Family Camp.
  • Contribute to post-summer review and follow-up, includingcamper and parent survey debriefs and program-related camper issues.
  • Support marketing and community engagement initiatives,including camp promotion, information events, reunions, and alumni engagement.
  • Manage the summer arrival and departure process in Torontoand participate in Director and Senior Staff meetings.
WhatYou Bring
  • Demonstrated experience leading camp, recreation, outdooreducation, or youth programming with certifications: NL, SFA, and Ropes Level 1 an asset.
  • Experience supervising seasonal staff and supportinghiring, training, coaching, and performance management.
  • Strong program planning and curriculum-development skills,with a focus on safe, engaging, and age-appropriate programming.
  • Experience with risk management, emergency procedures, andoperational safety in an active program environment.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to managebudgets, purchasing, inventories, schedules, and competing priorities.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with theability to work effectively with staff, suppliers, families, andcross-functional teams.
  • Comfort working with camp management databases andmaintaining accurate staff and camper program records; CampBrain experience isan asset.
  • Ability to work from Kandalore’s Toronto office during theoff-season and live/work at Camp Kandalore during the summer season.
