JOB TITLE ASSISTANT DIRECTOR, INFANT CENTRENUMBER OF POSITIONS 1POSITION TYPE PERMANENT, FULL-TIMEJob SummaryReporting to the Director of Kookum’s Daycare Centre, the Assistant Director plays a vital supporting role in day-to-day operations of the Daycare Program. This position ensures the delivery of a safe, developmentally appropriate and culturally responsive environment for children.The successful candidate will work collaboratively with the Director and staff to support program planning, foster staff development, and assist in maintaining effective administrative processes. This role combines hands-on involvement with children and staff with a strong focus on organization, communication, and quality program support.Core Responsibilities:Program Support & Delivery
- Collaborate with the Director to develop and implement a high-quality preschool program
- Plan and lead age-appropriate activities that support children’s physical, emotional, intellectual, and social development
- Ensure the provision of nutritious snacks and lunches in alignment with health and safety standards
- Maintain a clean, safe, and well-equipped learning environment
- Create and share weekly and monthly activity schedules with families and staff
- Design and deliver culturally responsive and inclusive programming
Staff Support & Supervision
- Support the Director in supervising and mentoring daycare staff
- Provide day-to-day coaching, encouragement, and constructive feedback to team members
- Offer input on staff performance evaluations and professional development needs
- Assist with addressing staff performance issues as needed
- Help assess training needs and recommend relevant learning opportunities
Administrative & Family Engagement
- Communicate regularly with families about programming, expectations, and children’s progress
- Maintain accurate, up-to-date, and confidential records for all children
- Support enrollment processes and fee collection
- Foster strong relationships with families and create a welcoming, inclusive environment
Community & External Partnerships
- Collaborate with outside organizations and agencies to connect families with additional resources and supports
Additional Responsibilities
- Step in as needed to support classroom activities and provide direct care for children
- Perform other duties as assigned to ensure the smooth operation of the daycare program
Qualifications:Education and Certification
- Early Childhood Educator (ECE) Level III certification, or currently working toward Level III
- Clear and current background checks, including:
- Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search
- Child Abuse Registry Check
- Current First Aid and CPR certification is considered an asset
Experience & Knowledge
- Experience working in a licensed early childhood education setting
- Strong understanding of child development principles and best practices
- Familiarity with emergent curriculum and play-based learning approaches
- Comfortable developing and leading engaging, developmentally appropriate activities
- Knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, and health & safety standards in childcare settings
- Experience supporting staff development and performance is an asset
Skills & Abilities
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team of educators and families
- Confident in documenting learning and planning from play-based observations
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written
- Calm and capable in emergency situations; familiar with emergency protocols
- Committed to creating a safe, inclusive, and culturally respectful environment for all children and families
