POSITION SUMMARY:
We are seeking a highly motivated Assistant Controller to join our finance team. Reporting to the Vice President of Finance and Administration, the Assistant Controller will provide financial reporting and advisory support to internal and external stakeholders. The successful candidate will have demonstrated effective collaboration and people management skills, excellent communication skills and be a self-starter who enjoys working in a fast-paced environment. The ideal candidate will be comfortable operating in a small agile organization, is process-oriented, and has a strong finance/accounting foundation, preferably with insurance industry experience.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
FINANCIAL REPORTING:
- Prepare monthly financial statements including analysis and commentary.
- Manage and coordinate month end close, review general journal entries and account reconciliations.
- Review and approve tax accruals, submit interim installments and file monthly and annual premium and sales tax returns.
- Complete investment reporting including monthly journals, cash flow forecast, account reconciliations and performance reports to executive team.
- Oversee treasury responsibilities including review of bank reconciliations, cash management, accounts receivable and accounts payable functions.
- Work with department managers to develop (and update) annual operating budget and operational plans, providing critical assessments of available efficiencies or potential cost savings.
- Responsible for preparing complete and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual expense analysis for the function (e.g. Direct and allocated expenses).
- Improve processes for higher efficiency and effectiveness, adapting to change and streamlining systems and processes.
- Present ongoing and ad hoc analysis, history and future, to senior management across the operations functions.
- Provide oversight of treasury responsibilities including bank reconciliations, cash management, and AP/AR functions.
- Act as main contact for annual external audit, and liaise with auditors, actuaries, reinsurers, and investment managers.
- Ability to partner and communicate effectively with various stakeholders such as executive/senior leadership group, external investment managers, regulators and members.
- Special projects as assigned.
- Additional duties, responsibilities, and activities appropriate to the nature of this role or as may be assigned or may arise from time to time.
REGULATORY & COMPLIANCE:
- Prepare annual/quarterly regulatory filing (P&C, FI-Main, FI-ULAE).
- Prepare quarterly financial statement projections and forecast for Capital Scenario Testing to ensure maintaining target ratio.
- Manage and coordinate financial and regulatory audits.
- Work with Governance, Risk, and Compliance Lead to support enterprise objectives including developing and revising policies, supporting risk management framework, and ad-hoc requirements as needed.
- Establish, monitor and enforce internal controls in accordance with policy.
- Ensure compliance with local, provincial, and federal fiscal reporting requirements.
- Develop and maintain corporate accounting policies to ensure the adequacy and effectiveness of internal controls over external Financial Reporting, supporting compliance.
- Keep current with emerging and newly released or updated regulatory standards and IFRS/ other applicable accounting standards & regulations.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- CPA designation with 7+ years of progressive experience, including at least 3 years in Financial Reporting.
- Experience in the insurance industry is strongly preferred (or a regulated institution within Financial Services).
- Ability to assess current accounting operations, offering recommendations for improvement and implementation of new processes.
- Strong financial and data driven acumen.
- A passion for both financial leadership and operational involvement.
- Minimum 2 years of supervisory experience preferred.
SKILLS & COMPETENCIES:
- Self-starter with the ability to work independently, particularly in the area of using sound, independent judgment, problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Demonstrated organizational and time-management skills.
- Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
- Advanced Excel skills; experience with Sage 300 is an asset.
- Ability to work under pressure with tight deadlines.
- Detail-oriented with a strong capacity for handling sensitive information and complex regulatory requirements.
- Strong interpersonal skills with ability to build effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to convey complex information to non-specialist audiences.
- Flexibility to work outside regular hours as required.
- Ability to travel on occasion.
