General Accountability
Reporting to the Controller, the Assistant Controller will support the financial operations of Co-opérative Régionale de Nipissing-Sudbury Limited by ensuring accurate financial reporting, compliance with accounting standards, and effective management of financial processes. This role is critical to maintaining the cooperative’s financial integrity and supporting decision-making to enhance operational efficiency and member value.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting: Assist in preparing accurate and timely financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements, in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
Budgeting and Forecasting: Support the development of annual budgets and forecasts, collaborating with department heads to align financial plans with cooperative goals.
Cost Analysis: Analyze costs related to petroleum, agriculture, and retail operations, providing reports on factors affecting pricing, profitability, and operational efficiencies.
Accounting Operations: Oversee day-to-day accounting activities, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger maintenance, and payroll processing.
Compliance and Audits: Ensure compliance with federal and provincial regulations, tax requirements, and cooperative bylaws. Assist in preparing for and coordinating external audits.
Patronage Dividend Support: Assist in calculating and distributing patronage dividends to members, ensuring accuracy and transparency in profit-sharing processes.
Process Improvement: Identify opportunities to streamline financial processes, improve yields, and reduce costs, providing recommendations to management.
Data Analysis: Prepare regular reports comparing standard costs to actual costs, analyzing variances, and supporting strategic decision-making for the cooperative’s diverse operations.
Team Collaboration: Work closely with the Controller and other finance team members to maintain accurate financial records and support the cooperative’s mission.
Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field. A CPA designation or progress toward CPA certification is preferred.
Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years of accounting or finance experience, preferably in a cooperative, agriculture, retail, or energy-related industry. Experience with cost accounting and financial analysis is an asset.
Skills:
o Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting standards.
o Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, SAP, or similar) and Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel.
o Analytical mindset with the ability to interpret financial data and provide actionable insights.
o Excellent organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to handle month-end processes and tight deadlines.
o Strong communication skills to collaborate with cross-functional teams and present financial information clearly.
