Job summary

Stantec in Burnaby, BC, seeks an Assistant Construction Manager with strong organization and initiative to grow through heavy civil water and sewer projects. You will help with field oversight, reporting, and coordination between engineers and contractors, while gaining diverse experience on treatment plants, pump stations, and flood control works.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or related field.
• 10+ years of municipal water, wastewater, or infrastructure project experience.
• P.Eng. designation or eligibility preferred.

Responsibilities

• Daily construction monitoring and reporting, ensuring conformance with plans and specs.
• Communicate with Project Manager, design pros, client and contractor; do not direct methods.
• Provide updates on progress or delays to clients and stakeholders.
• Review change orders and field orders for pricing reasonableness and constructability.
• Review RFIs, submittals, schedules, shop drawings and pay apps.
• Prepare docs and maintain project file management, including photos and reports.
• Perform civil engineering tasks: drawings, specs, calculations, cost estimates.
• Assist in preparing project documents and communications for deliverables.
• Identify developing technical problems and initiate corrective actions.
• Review schedules and comment on logic, delays, and changes.

Your Opportunity
The Assistant Construction Manager position is an intermediate level position for a highly organized and motivated individual who has the initiative to grow their career on a variety of heavy civil design and construction projects. The successful candidate will work on challenging and diverse tasks in a consulting and construction management role that will require application of technical skills, project delivery, and leadership. These projects could include design and construction of water and sewer pipelines, sitework for municipal water and sewer facilities, sewer lines, infrastructure systems including treatment plants, pump stations, waste containment facilities, dams and flood control structures, and related infrastructure.

You will perform a variety of tasks which may include calculations, field work, report writing, construction quality assurance activities, coordination of project tasks, and facilitation/participation in team meetings. These activities include construction observation, writing monthly field reports, and coordinating with, and providing acting as a communications liaison between the Engineer and Contractor.

Your Key Responsibilities

• Daily construction monitoring and reporting, checking for conformance with plans and specifications.
• Begins communicating with and making recommendations to Project Manager, design professionals, client, owner, developer, or contractor, but does not direct the means or methods of construction.
• Provides the Project Manager with updates on project progress or delays to client, design professionals, and/or contractor.
• Reviews change orders and field orders for reasonableness of pricing and constructability.
• Reviews requests for information, submittals, construction schedules, shop drawings and pay applications.
• Prepares documents and maintains file management of project-related information including correspondence, reports, and pictures.
• Perform civil engineering tasks which may include engineering drawings, specifications, calculations, engineering reports, cost estimates, design criteria, and prepare applications for regulatory agencies.
• Assist in the preparation of engineering project documents, client presentations, client contact and communication pertaining to specific project deliverables.
• Recognize when technical problems are developing and initiates appropriate corrective actions.
• Review construction schedules and comment on schedule logic, delays, and changes.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

• Working knowledge of construction principles, techniques and procedures, occupational hazards and safety precautions.Safety first mindset and ability to foster a safety culture.
• Takes initiative on tasks and in coordinating with other members of the project team, obtaining and sharing necessary information.
• Strong organizational skills and understanding of task assignments and schedule.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to solve problems using sound professional judgment, creativity and innovation
• Demonstrated ability to resolve issues collaboratively with contractors and clients while maintaining positive working relationships and avoiding unnecessary conflict.
• General understanding of concepts of relevant areas of civil engineering design, including gravity and pressure systems, geotechnical, survey, storm water/drainage design, road design, erosion and sediment control, and grading.
• Understanding of all phases of engineering document production and the relationship between drawings and specifications.
• Recognizes when technical problems are developing and initiates appropriate corrective actions using sound professional judgment, creativity and innovation.
• Ability to interpret sketches, drawings and other similar material.
• Developing ability to effectively discuss project issues with clients and reviewing agencies.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in civil, Mechanical, Chemical, Environmental Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
• Minimum 10 years of relevant experience in municipal water, wastewater, or industrial water infrastructure projects, including experience coordinating multidisciplinary project teams.
• Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or eligibility for registration with EGBC is preferred.

Position will work in both a field and office setting. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather. Must be available to travel for out-of-town projects when needed.

Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible.Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
