ABOUT THE ROLE

TransAlta is seeking a 1st Class Power Engineer to join our team as an Assistant Chief Engineer, based in Sarnia, Ontario. Reporting to the Operations Manager, this is a full-time, salaried, safety-sensitive position primarily responsible for the safe and reliable operation of the Sarnia Facility in accordance with TSSA regulations. The role involves ensuring all work complies with practices, codes, and regulations, and providing organizational leadership by developing, implementing, and managing business plans aligned with plant objectives.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Ensure the safety of our team by creating a safe work environment and following all safety practices and procedures.
  • Maintain uninterrupted service to our customers.
  • Ensure equipment reliability, energy optimization, and asset preservation.
  • Assess and manage risks, ensuring safety and environmental issues are addressed, recorded, and reported appropriately.
  • Continuously improve plant financial performance through optimization.
  • Provide strategic direction to direct reports and facilitate technical development of the operating team.
  • Foster a positive, empowered, and self-motivated work environment.
  • Manage training and development, ensuring needs are identified, training is implemented, and results are achieved.
  • Ensure adherence to operating and maintenance standards, policies, and procedures through regular audits.
  • Support change management initiatives to ensure best practices are utilized.
  • Identify and solve complex problems employing innovative methods and understanding of regulatory and business environments.
  • Operate within a complex environment with multiple priorities.
  • Develop strategies to address business and regulatory challenges.
  • Administer the Collective Agreement between TransAlta and UNIFOR.
  • Manage the plant cycle chemistry program.

WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU

  • Ontario First Class Stationary Engineer's certificate or equivalent Interprovincial Certificate, or actively working towards it.
  • At least four (4) years of supervisory experience in an industrial facility.
  • Understanding of plant operations and maintenance in industrial or electrical generating facilities.
  • Ability to create and manage operating and maintenance budgets.
  • Experience working in a unionized environment and interpreting union contracts.
  • Understanding of commercial contracts with stakeholders.
  • Strong leadership, coaching, and interpersonal skills with a collaborative approach.
  • Self-motivated and action-oriented.
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Effective team collaboration and influence skills across the company.

  • This is a safety-sensitive position; pre-employment testing is required.
  • Background checks, including criminal record, education, employment verification, or credit checks, may be required.
