Qualifications

The Town of Windsor introduces a great opportunity for a full-time Assistant Building Official or Prospective Assistant Building Official to work in a team-based environment enforcing CT building and Town zoning ordinances and regulations. Connecticut’s first town is strategically located on the beautiful Farmington and Connecticut Rivers between Hartford and Springfield, Massachusetts and is home to over 29,000 residents and a wide array of local and corporate businesses.

The Town of Windsor is an organization made up of diverse individuals who are committed to providing quality service through integrity, responsiveness, innovation, passion and partnership. The Windsor Building Department has a staff of five who work within a larger comprehensive Development Services Team that is dedicated to the safe, balanced conservation and development of the town. The starting salary range for a Certified ABO is $78,000 to $82,000 (potential for increase after 6 months) and for a Prospective ABO is $70,000 to $74,000 (increase after certification and additional increase after 1 year).Town employees enjoy a comprehensive benefit package, including health, dental and life insurance, tuition reimbursement, short- and long-term disability, and a defined contribution retirement plan.

The Assistant Building Official enforces the CT State Building Codes and local regulations and ordinances and issues correction notices and citations. Will perform on-site inspections of footings, foundations, framing, electrical hookups, plumbing, mechanical systems, etc. Explain and provide guidance regarding all applicable codes to architects, engineers, contractors, developers and other interested parties. Will assist with complex and sensitive customer service issues.

  • Three years of experience in building construction or inspection, preferably in a municipal building setting - Ability to read and understand complicated plans and blueprints
  • H.S. diploma or GED equivalent with an Associate Degree preferred; training in building trades or construction technology; or any combination of training and/or experience required
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite, Internet and other programs as needed
  • Valid driver’s license with a good driving record
  • Successful completion of the Town of Windsor’s pre-employment background check and drug screen – includes marijuana testing
