Title: Assistant Accountant

Position Type: Full-Time, Temporary (Canada Summer Jobs)

Anticipated Dates: May 5 – August 29, 2025

Hours: 35 hours per week; primarily weekdays

Location: 962 Bloor St West and in the community

Supervisor: Director of Finance & Operations

Compensation: $17.20/hour + 4% vacation pay (4% of gross income)

Sistering is a multi-service agency which offers practical and emotional support to women and trans people facing a variety of challenging life circumstances, including poverty, homelessness, social isolation, mental health and trauma histories.

Position Summary

We are seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Assistant Accountant to join our Finance team through the Canada Summer Jobs program. This is an excellent opportunity for a young professional interested in gaining hands-on experience in nonprofit accounting and financial operations.

Responsibilities

  • Process accounts payable and receivable, including bills, checks, and other financial documents, ensuring proper authorization and distribution
  • Verify financial data to ensure accuracy and compliance with organizational policies
  • Monitor financial transactions and maintain up-to-date records in accounting systems
  • Assist with account reconciliations and help resolve discrepancies
  • Participate in core bookkeeping functions such as journal entries, ledger maintenance, and financial statement preparation
  • Manage petty cash resources (tokens, taxi chits, gift cards) and assist with scanning and organizing documents for financial record-keeping

Qualifications

  • Academic background in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field
  • Basic knowledge of accounting principles and financial procedures
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel; familiarity with accounting software is an asset
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Strong numeracy and analytical skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion, and working in diverse communities

Eligibility

To be eligible for this position, applicants must:

  • Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the position
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN)
  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada

This position works in the office and community. Sistering is a 24/7 operation, fast paced, intense environment.
