Job description

Job Title: Medical Interpreter

Responsible for facilitating the successful delivery of services to linguistically diverse patients and family members. Follows interpretation requests, collaborating with qualified auxiliary interpreters to ensure comprehensive accommodation. Provides translation services, including sight translation and written translation of relevant materials such as patient information, pre-operative and post-operative instructions, discharge instructions, patient and family education, and follow-up care materials. Does this position require Patient Care? Yes

Essential Functions:

1. Serve as a cultural mediator, when appropriate, to enhance communication between staff and patients/families of different cultures, in relation to medical care, while adhering to the standard code of ethics for medical interpreters.
2. Maintain accurate documentation of interpretation encounters, including data such as location, duration, and purpose.
3. Coordinate and train staff on the use of telephone language interpretation services and relevant equipment.
4. Answer calls promptly and conduct interpretations in a friendly and professional manner.
5. Perform in a manner appropriate to each situation, demonstrating professional appearance, conduct, and promptness.
6. Adhere to the standard code of ethics for medical interpreters.

Qualifications:

Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent required.
Can this role accept experience in lieu of a degree? No

Experience: 2-3 years of healthcare and/or medical interpreting experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Attentive listening skills, understanding points made, asking questions appropriately, and avoiding inappropriate interruptions.
