Qualifications

Job description

We are currently looking for ASL Interpreters for a variety of academic disciplines. Candidates will be expected to attend in person classes at university/colleges in Oshawa and surrounding regions. These service providers help students overcome barriers in class to succeed!

We have a preference for candidates with an understanding of technical terminology for Computer Science and STEM classes; however, those from other educational disciplines are welcome to apply.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide interpreting and transliteration services to deaf and hard-of-hearing students, faculty, and staff in academic and non-academic settings, including classrooms, meetings, events, and activities, as requested by the university or college.
  • Follow ethical standards of the profession, maintain confidentiality, and adhere to the university or college's policies and procedures.
  • Maintain accurate and timely records of interpreting services provided, including timesheets, invoices, and other necessary documentation.
  • Attend required meetings and trainings, as specified by the university or college.
  • Maintain professional development by staying current with new developments and advancements in the field of ASL interpretation.

We are looking for individuals who have:

  • Active membership in the Canadian Association of Sign Language Interpreters (CASLI)
  • A minimum of a 2-year post-secondary diploma/degree from an accredited program
  • Ability to match the diverse language use of consumers
  • Experience with ASL interpretation in an academic environment
  • Sensitivity to the needs of people with disabilities
  • Ability to analyze and process information quickly
  • Ability to work independently, be punctual, dependable, and meet deadlines

We require a minimum commitment of one academic semester.

Assignments vary depending on students' schedules and typically take place between 8am and 9pm, Monday to Saturday.
