Job description

Overview

This position is responsible for advancing arts education by developing and facilitating arts education programs and other arts activities, programs and events that meet the needs of Richmond’s culturally diverse community.This position is also responsible for ensuring there are multiple opportunities available for children, youth, adults, and seniors to engage in and learn about the arts through centre-based and outreach programs and events.

Examples of key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Plan, develop, implement, schedule and evaluate arts education programs in a wide range of artistic disciplines for a range of ages and abilities.
  • Create, develop and implement arts education program guidelines.
  • Foster community partnerships to expand the arts in Richmond through outreach programs and community events.
  • Develop and coordinate promotional materials for seasonal, annual and one-off arts education programs and events.
  • Collaborate with other City staff members and departments to support city-wide events and programs.
  • Prepare and manage the arts education program budget and develop seasonal reports in consultation with the Program Manager.
  • Prepare reports, memos, emails and other correspondence to internal and external clients.
  • Recruit, onboard and supervise arts education program and event contractors.
  • Ensure program, facility, and general City procedures are followed by all arts contractors (e.g., instructors and event production). Provide direction to staff, and potentially provide input into performance evaluations and hiring.
  • Recruit and train program and event volunteers.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of external and internal contacts.
  • Prepare and maintain records, reports and correspondence related to the work.
  • Use programming and registration software to schedule and promote classes to the general public through City resources
  • General maintenance of registration software including changes, cancellations and refunds.
  • Ensure clear communications and smooth operations with front desk staff of Cultural Centre.
  • Address and respond to public inquiries as part of providing optimum customer service.
  • Identify and assess community needs and gaps in service through programming statistics, city demographics, market research, trends in the arts, etc.
  • Keep up to date withdevelopments in the arts and culture field, and liaise with other arts professionals.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices and objectives of programming in community arts education spaces.
  • Sound knowledge of teaching and evaluation methods.
  • Ability to coordinate, implement and evaluate arts education programs.
  • Ability to facilitate community programs and events through community arts outreach.
  • Experience in the preparation and coordination of promotional material.
  • Ability to create and foster relationships with outside agencies to advance programming.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts.
  • Ability to prioritize competing demands, work well under pressure and deal with stressful situations in a professional manner.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to work under minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work collegially and collaboratively with a broad range of staff.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Experience in developing and managing budgets.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage numerous projects under deadline.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to use computer applications such as PeopleSoft, Xplor, Outlook and other Microsoft programs; ability to use REDMS or a similar records management system.
  • Ability to successfully clear aPolice Information Check
Qualifications and Experience:
  • A University degree in Arts or in a related discipline, supplemented with a minimum of 2 years up to and including 5 years related experience in Arts programming is required.
  • First Aid and CPR certificate is preferred.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
