PRIMARY FUNCTION:

Reporting to the Managing Lawyer, this position offers practical experience in child protection, family, criminal, immigration, and administrative law.

DUTIES:

  • Meet with clients for initial consultations and advice.
  • Attend court for child protection and family law proceedings.
  • Assess appeal applications for funding eligibility.
  • Conduct legal research as directed.
  • Participate in mediations and dispute resolution processes.
  • Draft legal documents such as notices, pleadings, affidavits, and appeals.
  • Research and prepare briefing notes on legal issues.
  • Assist with hearing preparation and attend hearings or trials.
  • Provide legal advice to clients on relevant matters.
  • Participate in Chambers Applications and duty counsel programs.
  • Respond to inquiries from clients, courts, and staff.
  • Interview clients and witnesses as needed.
  • Support team members and perform other related duties.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Basic requirements:

  • Law degree from a recognized law school.
  • Post-secondary education in social work, psychology, criminology, or paralegal training is an asset.
  • Knowledge of relevant substantive law and procedures.
  • Experience working with low-income clients and trauma-informed services is an asset.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Understanding of Legal Aid BC policies, provincial and Supreme Court rules.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to communicate legal information clearly.
  • Awareness of Indigenous cultures, histories, and community resources.
  • Self-awareness regarding positionality, privilege, and cultural safety.
  • Sound judgment, diplomacy, and tact.
  • Ability to handle a heavy workload and work under pressure.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Lived experience or knowledge of systemic barriers and justice access issues.
  • Proficiency with Windows, MS Word, Outlook, and Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Criminal Record Check in accordance with the Criminal Records Review Act.
  • Internal review of previous legal aid employment.
