Job description

Articling student 2026-2027 (10-month contract):

We are seeking a dedicated articling student to gain exceptional legal training and exposure to various areas of law related to the financial services and FinTech environment, including corporate commercial, innovation, technology, marketing, advertising, regulatory, and governance.

Under supervision, you will work with a team of in-house lawyers on special projects and daily operations at Interac.

You’ll be responsible for:

  • Providing level one legal services, including drafting and negotiating agreements such as non-disclosure, consulting, proof of concepts, independent contractor, incentive, and letter agreements.
  • Interpreting contracts for business units.
  • Preparing summaries, digests, and inventories of documents.
  • Conducting legal research on topics like data handling and legislation impact.

Supporting senior legal personnel with:

  • Negotiating agreements with partners, clients, suppliers, and vendors.
  • Providing legal advice for ongoing services.
  • Supporting new product and service initiatives.
  • Assessing strategic initiatives for business units.
  • Monitoring compliance with regulatory obligations.

You bring:

  • A law degree (LL.B. or J.D.) from a recognized law school.
  • Eligibility to commence articling in August 2026, as per Law Society of Ontario requirements.
  • For international applicants: Credentials from an international university with NCA certificate from Federation of Law Societies; include the certificate in your application.
  • An interest in Interac's products, services, and the payments ecosystem.
  • The ability to problem-solve independently and work collaboratively.
  • A willingness to learn and accept constructive feedback.
  • Interest in learning about complex areas.
  • Willingness to take on responsibilities supporting the team and organization.
  • Proactivity in time management and communication.
  • Critical thinking and analytical skills.
  • The ability to assess legal and reputational risk.
  • Experience in regulatory, financial, payments, technology, or intellectual property fields is a plus, but not required.
