Job description

Hours of Work: 37.5 hours per week with the ability to work flexible hours

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

Reporting to the Program Manager, the Child and Youth Worker is responsible for providing support to the children and their mothers. The Child and Youth Worker is responsible for a wide range of services that address the impact of abuse on children. Key areas of responsibilities include development of safety strategies and plans, supports, referrals, advocacy, supportive counseling, and programs for the children. The Child and Youth Worker will be working onsite at Armagh's Mississauga location.

This position is for one (1) year full-time contracts with a possibility of extension. This position offers a salary range of $54,600 to $58,000 annually, with 3 weeks of paid vacation and a comprehensive benefits package.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Accompany children and their mothers to appointments when necessary
  • Adheres to the Child, Youth and Family Services Act in particular to the section on “Duty to Report”
  • Assertive and patient when dealing with complex and sensitive issues
  • Assist with school registrations for children and act as a liaison regarding progress concerns
  • Complete statistics for children’s groups and programs
  • Conduct intake and discharge interviews with all clients
  • Develop positive relationships with children through the process of positive role modeling and mentoring
  • Ensure children’s play areas and equipment are maintained in good order to ensure safety
  • Ensure clothes, toys and school supplies are provided to children as needed
  • Ensure intake, discharge and all other appropriate information is complete
  • Ensure that emergency and crisis situations are approached with clear and swift decisions
  • Maintain accurate referral records and security of client files
  • Participate on committees as required
  • Plan, develop and facilitate programs and recreational activities for children
  • Provide one-to-one and group counseling for children
  • Provide mothers and children with information, support and resources regarding: daycare; school; formal counseling; supportive services; before and after school care; recreational services and other issues relating to their situation and facilitating referrals
  • Record pertinent information concerning client plan and progress in client file
  • Regularly assess children’s needs and assist mothers in developing and implementing a plan of action
  • Share on-call responsibilities with front line staffs
  • Support children in developing a range of healthy individual coping and problem-solving skills, conflict and anger management skills, communication skills, and life management skills to enhance emotional well-being
  • Support children to tell their stories and to understand their rights, self-esteem needs, safety planning and violence prevention strategies
  • Support children's emotional and social development, encouraging understanding of others and positive self-concepts
  • Other duties or responsibilities as negotiated and assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • University degree or college Diploma in Child and Youth field
  • 2 years relevant work experience working with children and youth
  • Knowledge and experience of child development stages and related issues
  • Experience planning and implementing programs for children of diverse cultures
  • Ability to accomplish a multitude of tasks, with conflicting priorities and timelines
  • Ability to maintain a high level of accuracy and confidentiality; attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills
  • An awareness and understanding of Violence Against Women and its impact on women and children
  • An awareness of the safety needs of the organization and confidentiality of the clients and agency
  • Excellent communication skills, listening, verbal and writing
  • Excellent organizational, time management and multi-tasking abilities
  • Possess maturity and ability to work with minimal supervision and as a team
  • Proficiency in a second language relevant to the demographics of Peel Region is an asset
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Valid Driver's License and use of a reliable vehicle
  • Valid First Aid/CPR Certification
  • Vulnerable Sector Police Clearance Certificate and maintaining of clearance requirements during course of employment

PHYSICAL / MENTAL EFFORT:

Based on the work schedule, the frequency of the following tasks will vary according to need:

  • Ability to lift unsupported up to 25 lbs.
  • Carrying / lifting materials, donations etc. using stairs or elevator
  • Changing priorities and work flow to accommodate needs of others and scheduled/imposed timelines
  • Using a computer, monitor and other office equipment
  • Work effectively with people of varied background including the corporate sector
  • Work independently and with frequent interruptions
