DHL Express currently has an opening for an Area Operations Manager for the Prairies Region. You will lead and direct all phases of the Company’s Operations within the provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta, ensuring that performance objectives, as detailed by the strategic plan, cost controls, and revenue targets are met. This leader will also act as a proactive member of the Sales resource team in providing Customer service solutions.

Reporting to the Director of Engineering and Ground Operations for DHL Express Canada and based in Calgary, the successful candidate will manage all aspects of local Operations. You will identify and recommend process or cost improvements and execute the Operations strategy for your area. Responsibilities include proposing and influencing business solutions, expanding ecommerce tool usage, managing telecoms, and handling recovery procedures in case of IT incidents.

You will play an active role in supporting the Director of Engineering and Ground Operations and your colleagues as a member of the Canadian Operations Leadership team.

How will you contribute to the success of DHL?

  1. Establish and meet/exceed customer service performance indicators for on-time delivery, tracing, dispatching & claims, including missed pick-ups, scanning compliance, and overall service quality.
  2. Responsibility for cost optimization of the Region, including locations in Calgary, Edmonton, and Winnipeg.
  3. Manage employee and labour relations in accordance with the Collective Agreement.
  4. Handle all local Human Resources issues in collaboration with the HR team.
  5. Ensure successful implementation and maintenance of Track and Trace technology, including scanning compliance, P&D, on-hand inventory, linking multi-piece shipments, and transfer to agents.
  6. Monitor and improve EBIT through profitable revenue growth, managing PUD costs, handling, and timely data entry.
  7. Assist in developing long- and short-term service center objectives and plans for achievement.
  8. Prepare service center profit plans for approval and execution.
  9. Identify and track route service standards and adjust operations as needed, e.g., driver cost per shipment, stops per hour, driver load, and departure times.
  10. Implement continuous improvement initiatives.
  11. Manage special projects as agreed with the Director of Engineering and Ground Operations and Vice President.
  12. Provide leadership through decision-making, communication, and motivation to ensure effective performance of staff and management.
  13. Organize and develop staff through training and counseling, providing growth and promotion opportunities.
  14. Ensure staff compliance with company standards, policies, and procedures, including workplace conduct, Occupational Health & Safety, Transport of Dangerous Goods, and WCB.
  15. Stay informed on business conditions and activities of competitors.
  16. Travel to and manage outlying depots as required.
