Job summary

Rootstock Architecture is seeking a capable Designer to support a Principal Architect across design, documentation, coordination, and client interaction. This full-time role, in Edmonton, offers hybrid work with in-office attendance and work-from-home days.

You will contribute to multiple active files and have opportunities for growth within the studio. The ideal candidate has 5+ years experience, is organized, proactive, and able to balance high-level design with production work, including

Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience in an architectural practice.
• Organized, reliable, and proactive.
• Clear communication with clients and consultants.
• Ability to contribute across design and production, including drawing packages.
• Experience with residential and/or commercial projects.
• Understanding of basic building systems and wood-frame construction.
• Enjoys a small, collaborative studio environment.

Rootstock Architecture is looking for a capable, well-rounded Designer who is organized, proactive, and comfortable working across both design and production in a client-facing environment, with the ability to take ownership of work and follow it through.

This role is suited to someone with industry experience who is confident supporting a Principal Architect across all phases of project delivery—design, documentation, coordination, and client interaction.

This is a Full-time position with structured or flexible work arrangements, including work-from-home days. The applicant must be located in Edmonton or planning to relocate to Edmonton as the position requires in office attendance.

The Opportunity

This is a highly involved role for someone who is comfortable taking ownership of deliverables, managing priorities, and working directly with clients and consultants.

You will work closely with the Principal Architect to support and help lead project delivery across multiple active files, with the opportunity for long-term growth within the firm.

This role is ideal for someone looking to step beyond a production role into a more integrated, leadership-track position within a growing studio.

This role requires someone who is equally comfortable at a high level and in the details—able to contribute to design direction while also stepping into production (including DP-level drawings) if needed.

This role suits someone who enjoys being involved, contributing ideas, and taking responsibility—not just executing tasks.

We’re Looking for Someone Who:

• Has 5+ years of experience in an architectural practice

• Can confidently contribute across both design and production, including drawing packages when needed
• Has experience with residential and/or commercial projects
• Understands basic building systems and wood-frame construction
• Enjoys working in a small, collaborative studio environment
• Is interested in improving how we work, including exploring new tools and technologies

Software Experience

Experience with the following is beneficial:

• Revit (required)
• SketchUp (preferred)
• Adobe InDesign
• Enscape or similar visualization tools
• AutoCAD (basic working knowledge)
• Other visualization or presentation tools
