Job summary

WSP in British Columbia is seeking an Archaeology Field Director to lead and manage field programs across the province, with a focus on Northeast BC. You will work with the Heritage team to deliver projects from planning through reporting, while ensuring safety and regulatory compliance.

The role requires a Bachelor's in Archaeology or related field, Field Director status or progress, and strong teamwork with Indigenous communities.

Qualifications

  • Field Director status or active progress toward qualification
  • Commitment to working with Indigenous communities
  • Experience identifying, recording, and evaluating archaeological sites; artifact analysis
  • Ability to work safely in remote outdoor environments
  • Experience with GPS and hand-held devices; ESRI Field Maps is an asset
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat
  • Strong technical writing and data management
  • Valid Class 5 driver's license and willingness to travel BC
  • First aid and safety tickets are assets

Responsibilities

  • Lead archaeological field programs, including survey, testing, excavation or monitoring for infrastructure projects.
  • Work with project teams to meet client, Indigenous, and regulatory requirements.
  • Support compliance with heritage legislation and permits.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate archaeological considerations into planning.
  • Engage respectfully with Indigenous communities throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Mentor junior team members and manage project scope, schedule and budget.
  • Contribute to field program planning, logistics, health and safety, and QA processes.
  • Prepare proposals, technical reports, site records, permit applications, and other deliverables.

Explore Limitless Possibilities - WSP has an exciting opportunity for an Archaeology Field Director to join our Heritage team in Fort St John, British Columbia. As Field Director, you will work closely with the Heritage team to lead and manage projects throughout the province with a focus on Northeast British Columbia. You will gain valuable and diverse work experience as part of our province-wide Heritage team and will have opportunities to work on multidisciplinary projects that will contribute to your professional development. The successful candidate will have or be close to obtaining their Field Director qualification in the Subarctic/Boreal Forest Culture Area.

Your Impact
  • Lead archaeological field programs, which may include archaeological survey and testing, excavation, or monitoring, in support of infrastructure, energy, transportation, and community development projects
  • Work with the project team to achieve the technical requirements and expectations of clients, Indigenous groups, and regulatory agencies
  • Support compliance with provincial and federal heritage legislation, permits, and regulatory requirements
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams at WSP to integrate archaeological and cultural heritage considerations into project planning and delivery
  • Engage respectfully with Indigenous communities and their members during all aspects of the project lifecycle
  • Mentor junior team members and share knowledge to support the growth of archaeological expertise within the team
  • Work with the project team to manage scope, schedule, and budget throughout the project lifecycle
  • Contribute to field program planning, logistics, health and safety implementation, and quality management processes
  • Participate in WSP's Health & Safety program, demonstrating a "Safety First" focus and acting as a role model to other staff
  • Undertaking analysis and preparing and contributing to proposals and technical reports as well as site records, permit applications, and other required archaeological deliverables
The Skills That Set You Apart
  • Bachelor's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related discipline
  • Field Director status in the Subarctic/Boreal Forest Culture Area, or are a strong field supervisor actively working towards your Field Director qualification
  • Commitment and enthusiasm for working with Indigenous communities
  • Experience identifying, recording, and evaluating archaeological sites, as well as artifact analysis and cataloguing practices
  • Ability and willingness to work safely and effectively in remote outdoor environments and varying weather conditions
  • Experience with standard data collection equipment that may include GPS and hand-held tablets. Experience with ESRI Field Maps is an asset
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat applications
  • Strong technical writing, organization, and data management skills
  • High level of professionalism, integrity, and ethics
  • Valid Class 5 driver's license and willingness to travel throughout British Columbia as required
  • First aid and other safety tickets would be considered an asset, but all necessary training will be provided to the successful applicant

Compensation:
  • BC, AB, SK, NT, YT & NU: $80,800 - $107,000
  • MB & ON: $73,700 - $101,500
  • NB, NL, NS, PEI & QC : $73,000 - $96,900
