Job description

Working with the Town of Newmarket’s Recreation and Culture Team offers the opportunity to make a difference and connect with your community! Working in Recreation means being part of something special, gaining valuable work experience, and learning new skills. We are looking for dedicated individuals who enjoy working with others and have a passion for delivering high-quality programs, events, and services. Aquatics Assistant Instructor ($19.73 - $20.93):
  • Support instructor in running fun, engaging, and inclusive swim lessons. Follow directions on how to utilize training and formations to ensure lessons are safe.
  • Work with instructors to focus on key participants to ensure their ongoing success according to Lifesaving Society’s “Must See” standards.
  • Use excellent customer service skills to resolve conflicts or concerns from program participants and the public, or refer to the appropriate staff.
  • Maintain current qualifications, attend regular training sessions, update clinics, and remain open to feedback about instructional programs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in accordance with departmental guidelines.
Deck Attendant ($18.79 - $19.94):
  • Monitor swim participants for safe use of water slides and assist lifeguards in maintaining a safe aquatic environment by scanning, enforcing rules, admission standards, and completing regular safety checks to ensure compliance with health regulations.
  • Follow directions from lifeguards in emergency first aid situations and support the team in managing the public.
  • Use excellent customer service skills to resolve conflicts or concerns from program participants and the public, or refer to the appropriate staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in accordance with departmental guidelines.

Job Requirements

All:

  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR-C award from Lifesaving Society, St. John’s Ambulance, or Canadian Ski Patrol is required prior to hire.
  • Current Lifesaving Society Bronze Cross award is required; Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard award is an asset.
  • Ability to deal courteously and effectively with the public, certifying organizations, emergency service agencies, program participants, and staff.
  • Experience volunteering in an aquatic environment is an asset.
  • Must be 14 years of age or older.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • A Police Vulnerable Sector Check (Declaration of Minor) satisfactory to the Town is required due to the nature of contacts in this position.
  • Availability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.

Aquatics Assistant Instructor Only:

  • Current Lifesaving Society Assistant Swim Instructor or Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor award is required.
  • Current High Five (Principles of Healthy Child Development) certification is required.
