Job summary

The City of Saskatoon is seeking a Lifeguard and Instructor Supervisor to monitor lifeguard and instructional standards in the City’s aquatic facilities, ensuring health and safety guidelines are followed.

Under the Recreation Technician 10, you will mentor staff, deliver on-going training, assist with program development, and support public bookings while maintaining fitness and adherence to standards.

Qualifications

  • Education level and certifications required for lifeguard and instructor roles.
  • Two years' experience as a lifeguard and instructor.
  • Knowledge of lifeguard techniques, first aid and emergency procedures.
  • Ability to lead and develop staff to meet program standards.
  • Ability to work independently and communicate effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor lifeguard and instructional standards in aquatic environments.
  • Mentor staff with feedback and evaluations to develop skills.
  • Provide technical advice and support for aquatic programming.
  • Assist with development and delivery of staff orientation and in-service training.
  • Develop evaluation procedures for lifeguard and instructor staff.

This position is a CUPE 59 position and will be filled in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Should it not be filled in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement, external candidates will be considered.

Job Summary

Under the leadership of the Recreation Technician 10, this position monitors the lifeguard and instructional standards, provided in an aquatic environment, in accordance with the health and safety standards adopted by the City of Saskatoon.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provides guidance, coaching, training, development, and monitoring of the technical skills of lifeguard and instruction staff in accordance with the technical standards, skills, and knowledge requirements.
  • Mentoring staff by providing lifeguards and instructors with on-going feedback and evaluations in order to develop technical aquatic skills of lifeguarding staff.
  • Provides technical advice and support for aquatic related programming to the program staff.
  • Assists with the development and delivery of lifeguard and instructor orientation and in-service training programs and resources.
  • Assists with the development of lifeguard and instructor evaluation procedures and practices.
  • Provides instruction and safeguards public admission and rental group activities in accordance with the established lifeguard and instructor standards, skills, and knowledge, as required.
  • Participates in training programs, conferences and workshops established to maintain fitness levels as well as lifeguard and instructor standards.
  • Provides direction and assistance during emergency situations, as required.
  • Provides aquatic related education and training tools as required to the aquatic staff, program participants, and the public.
  • Provides recertification clinics for lifeguard and instructor staff, as required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience Requirements:

  • Grade 12 education.
  • Possession of the following valid qualifications:
    • CPR/AED Certification Level C;
    • National Lifeguard Service Certification (Pool);
    • Lifesaving Society Instructor Certification,
    • Aquatic Emergency Care Award or Standard First Aid;
    • Possession of either National Lifeguard (N.L.A.) Instructor or Lifesaving Society Instructor Trainer Certification; with the ability to obtain the other one within 12 months.
    • Possession of, or ability to obtain within 6 months after date of hire, Standard First Aid/CPR Course Instructor certification.
  • Two years' experience as a lifeguard and instructor.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:

  • Knowledge of current lifeguard techniques, first aid, emergency procedures, and instructional techniques, methods and practices.
  • Ability to direct and provide leadership and support to staff in carrying out lifeguard and instructor standards, skills, and techniques.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with staff, peers, supervisor, and the public.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing to supervisor, staff, and the public.
  • Ability to demonstrate skills and techniques as required by instructor and lifeguard program standards.
  • Ability to maintain fitness level as required by the City of Saskatoon Inservice Guidelines.
  • Ability to exercise good judgement in resolving issues that affect use of the facility by external organizations and the public, and direction during emergency situations.
  • Skill in operation of a computer with word-processing and spreadsheet software.
Requires Security Check

Acceptable current Criminal Record Check (CRC) and Vulnerable Sector Search (VSS) upon offer of employment.

Additional Requirements

Shift work and weekend work are involved.

Weekly Hours:40

Salary Range:$26.79to$29.54CADper hour(2026rates)
