Apprentice Mechanic - 2nd, 3rd, or 4th Year

SOUTHLAND is excited to be expanding our routes throughout the Regional Municipality of Halifax for the 2025-2026 school year and is currently hiring Apprentice Mechanics (2nd, 3rd, or 4th year) to join our team. This is an opportunity to be part of a growing company that offers a supportive environment, personalized training, and ongoing development.

Reporting to the Shop Foreman, you will work in a fast-paced environment maintaining a fleet of school buses. SOUTHLAND offers a state-of-the-art environment with an emphasis on safety and training. To qualify for this position, you must be a reliable self-starter with strong interpersonal skills.

Shifts available: Day (7:00 AM–3:30 PM or 8:00 AM–4:30 PM) and Evening (3:30 PM–12:00 AM)

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform ongoing maintenance and repair of school buses
  • Respond to in-town and rural breakdowns when needed
  • Complete spring and winter seasonal maintenance
  • Use diagnostic tools to identify mechanical or electrical issues
  • Maintain accurate documentation of all work performed

Requirements

  • Registered Apprentice (2nd, 3rd or 4th Year)
  • Clear criminal record
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Pre-employment drug and alcohol testing required
  • Own hand tools
  • Computer proficiency
  • Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills
  • Experience with gasoline or propane-powered equipment is an asset
  • Fluent in written and spoken English
