The Government of Northwest Territories offers an Apprenticeship position for a Carpenter/Maintenance Technician in Hay River. This role involves training under a Journeyman Carpenter, focusing on carpentry work and preventative maintenance within the South Slave Region. Successful candidates will gain essential skills while completing the requirements for Journeyman certification.

The Department of Infrastructure (INF) provides high quality services to the public and Government of the Northwest Territories’ (GNWT) departments, boards and agencies including the planning, design, construction, acquisition, operation and maintenance of public transportation infrastructure and the buildings, works and equipment required for the GNWT to deliver its programs and services. INF makes essential petroleum products available for sale to the public where these products are not provided by the private sector, and promotes the development and increased use of energy efficient technologies. INF also regulates electrical and mechanical safety services and licenses individuals and vehicles operating in the territory.
This is an Apprenticeship position, working under the direction of a qualified Journeyman Carpenter. The purpose of this position is to obtain the combination and work experience required to obtain Journeyman certification. Reporting to the Facilities and Maintenance Coordinator, this position is located in Hay River and is responsible for learning how to perform carpentry work on GNWT assets in the South Slave Region, and identify any problems encountered during preventative maintenance checks.

Typically, the above would be attained by:
Completion of Grade 10 (English 10, Math 10, Science 10 OR the equivalent). Successful completion of a Trades Entrance exam. Class 5 Driver's License is required.
Continued employment as an apprentice is conditional upon the successful completion of the required hours of experience, coursework and exam for each level in the apprenticeship program.
