Job summary

Roots, established in 1973, is a proudly Canadian lifestyle brand. The Application Architect role powers Roots' systems across retail and online environments, collaborating with Analysts, Developers, QA, Infrastructure and Security to design, document, and build critical applications and integrations.

Reporting to IT leadership, you’ll help shape production apps, promote best practices, and grow your architectural skills within a fast‑paced, inclusive team at Roots.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of full‑stack development with design exposure.
  • Experience with C# / .NET.
  • Front‑end development with HTML, CSS, JavaScript and modern frameworks.
  • Cloud development exposure (Azure Functions, App Service, AWS Lambda).
  • Relational and/or NoSQL databases.
  • Source control (GitHub, Bitbucket, Azure DevOps).
  • Understanding of CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, Jenkins).
  • Agile development practices.
  • Retail tech experience (POS, e‑commerce, inventory, financial systems) is a plus.
  • Post‑secondary education in CS or software engineering or related field.

Responsibilities

Nature & Scope

Your Role at Roots

The Application Architect is an important technical role supporting the systems and applications that power business operations at Roots. Reporting to the Vice President of Information Technology, this role focuses on assisting with system integrations, supporting data flows across platforms, and contributing to software development best practices across multiple technical streams.

Working within a multidisciplinary team—including Analysts, Developers, QA, Infrastructure, and Security—you will help design, document, and build applications and integrations that enable key business processes, enhance customer experience, and improve operational efficiency across Roots’ retail and online environments.

In this role, you will support the development, documentation, implementation, and maintenance of production applications and integrations. The ideal candidate is passionate about technology, eager to grow their architectural skill set, and excited to contribute to the success of an iconic Canadian brand.

Key Responsibilities: How You’ll Make An Impact
  • Support full‑stack development for on‑premise and cloud‑based applications.
  • Assist in designing scalable, reliable, and secure software solutions.
  • Contribute to technical documentation, including architectural and data flow diagrams.
  • Help troubleshoot production systems and identify root causes.
  • Collaborate with Business Analysts and end users to understand requirements and translate them into technical implementation plans.
  • Participate in code reviews and help promote development best practices.
Qualifications & Experience: The Skills You Bring
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in full‑stack software development, with exposure to solution or application design.
  • Experience with C# / .NET.
  • Front‑end development experience with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and modern JS frameworks.
  • Exposure to cloud development (Azure Functions, Azure App Service, AWS Lambda, etc.).
  • Experience with relational and/or NoSQL databases.
  • Familiarity with source control systems such as GitHub, Bitbucket, Azure DevOps, or similar.
  • Understanding of CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, Jenkins).
  • Experience supporting or troubleshooting production systems is an asset.
  • Familiarity with Agile development practices.
  • Preferred experience in retail technologies such as POS systems, e‑commerce platforms, inventory management, or financial systems.
  • Post‑secondary education in computer science, software engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Solid analytical and problem‑solving abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Willingness to take initiative, learn new technologies, and grow into broader architectural responsibilities.
  • Experience with middleware platforms (Mulesoft, Boomi, Azure Integration Services, Informatica) is an asset.
