This role requires full time on site presence.

Your role:

CBC North in Yellowknife is looking for an announcer/operator who can work in the Tłı̨chǫ language. Reporting to the managing editor, the announcer/operator is responsible for finding, researching, preparing and presenting interviews, packaged items, community and news stories, and hosting and operating radio programs in Tłı̨chǫ. The work will include preparing Tłı̨chǫ versions of program material for use on radio and television.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will prepare, produce and present on air programs and program material from conducting interviews to editing tape and hosting on air. Work is governed by CBC Journalistic Standards and Practises. Versatility, cooperation and teamwork are essential in our busy newsroom.

Key Tasks:

  • Planning and organizing Tłı̨chǫ-language programming, including pitching and researching stories, interviewing sources and preparing material for air.
  • Writing material for broadcast.
  • Developing and maintaining contact with a variety of sources.
  • Gathering and reporting information from various sources.
  • Providing narration and linking continuity between program segments.
  • Reading daily newscasts, news bulletins, weather forecasts and other survival information on air.
  • Ensures the proper operating condition of equipment by making the necessary checks.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

  • A minimum of a high school education or an acceptable combination of education and work experience. Previous on-air experience in radio or television would be an asset.
  • Excellent on-air presentation skills.
  • Excellent Tłı̨chǫ skills.
  • Strong writing and interviewing skills.
  • Critical thinking and strong editorial judgment.
  • A firm understanding of northern issues.
  • Good computer skills and experience with forming and maintaining social media networks using external platforms like YouTube, Facebook, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform at a high level in a high pressure, tight deadline environment.

Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.
