Job summary

The City of Coquitlam is seeking two regular full-time Animal Shelter Attendants (plus auxiliary on-call) to join our team. You will care for dogs, cats and small animals, and assist with administrative tasks in a dynamic shelter environment.

Responsibilities include feeding, handling, walking, kennel cleaning and basic clerical duties. Shifts include Sunday–Thursday or Tuesday–Saturday, with openings/closings between 7am and 9pm; on-call coverage may occur on holidays or weekends.

Qualifications

• Solid understanding of care for dogs, cats and small animals.
• Excellent customer service and communication skills.
• Ability to guide and supervise volunteers.
• Class 5 BC Driver’s license.
• Ability to lift and carry bulky objects.

About You / What We Are Looking For

Are you a team player with a genuine passion forworking with animals? The City of Coquitlam has an exciting opportunity for tworegular full time, as well as auxiliary (on-call) Animal Shelter Attendants tojoin our team. If you love animal care and have relevant experience, this couldbe the perfect role for you! Your responsibilities will include a mix of administrativetasks and animal care duties.

As an Animal Shelter Attendant, your main focuswill be on providing excellent care for all impounded dogs, cats, and smallanimals. This will involve feeding, handling, walking and ensuring theirwell-being. You will also play a vital role in maintaining the cleanliness ofkennels and cages. Some routine clerical and office support tasks will be partof your duties as well. While you'll have general supervision, you'll also havethe autonomy to make independent decisions within established policies andprocedures. Prepare for a dynamic and fast-paced environment that offers ampleopportunities for personal and professional growth. There are two regularfull-time positions available, one is scheduled Sunday – Thursday, and theother is Tuesday – Saturday. Both include a combination of opening and closingshifts scheduled between 7am and 9pm. There may also be auxiliary opportunitiesavailable with shift coverage often needed on holidays, evenings and weekends and shortnotice based on absences.

Minimum Qualifications

To thrive in this exciting role, you must have asolid understanding of proper methods, practices, and procedures for the careand feeding of dogs, cats, and small animals. Familiarity with relevant rulesand regulations is essential, as is knowledge of medications and routinemedical treatments for injured or ill animals. Proficiency in carrying outroutine tasks related to animal feeding and care is a must. Exceptionalcustomer service skills are a key requirement, as you'll interact courteouslyand effectively with the public. Strong communication skills will be essentialfor understanding and following oral instructions, as well as working withminimal supervision. Being able to provide guidance to volunteers is vital too.The role will also involve completing non-complex forms and reports, as well aslifting and carrying bulky objects such as bags of feed, hoses, and large dogs.

Requirements for this role include holding a Class5 BC Driver’s license and completing the 12th grade of school.

PreferredQualifications

Sound experience working with animals or an equivalent combination oftraining and experience will be beneficial. A team-oriented, can-do attitude ishighly valued, and prior professional education and experience in Animal Care& Control would be a considerable asset.

T this CUPE position hasan hourly rate range of $31.85 - $37.09 plus 12 % inlieu of benefits. The rate of pay is based on a variety of factorsincluding qualifications, knowledge, experience and skills.
