About the Role

The Preclinical Research Facility at Sunnybrook Research Institute (SRI) upholds the highest standards for the ethical care and use of animals in research, in accordance with SRI, the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC), and the Ontario Animals for Research Act. This facility supports various research avenues essential to Sunnybrook’s mission of Inventing the Future of Healthcare.

Responsibilities
  • Provide a variety of para-veterinary health care duties
  • Assist with surgeries and procedures involving research animals
  • Prepare animals and equipment for surgeries, monitor animals during and after procedures
  • Perform daily physical examinations and treatments
  • Administer medications and provide first aid
Qualifications and Skills
  • Animal Health Technician Certificate or Veterinary Technologist Diploma
  • At least 2 years of post-graduate experience with research animals
  • CALAS certification at RLAT or RLAT(R) level is desirable; must be completed within 2 years of hire
  • Strong technical skills, organization, initiative, and ability to work independently and in teams
  • Experience with a range of animal species, especially rodents and swine
  • Knowledge of animal standards, CCAC guidelines, and relevant regulations
  • Ability to follow policies, detect issues, and resolve problems creatively
  • Excellent record keeping, attention to detail, and interpersonal skills
  • Compassion and sensitivity for animals
