The Opportunity

APC is seeking (1) one 6-mth term Animal Care Attendant who is responsible for routine duties to assist in the day-to-day husbandry of the animal collection, zoo operations and enhancement of the zoo visitor experience. Under general supervision, the incumbent will maintain the quality standards of accredited zoological practices.

Responsibilities include: animal husbandry and handling, exhibit maintenance, diet preparation, enrichment, behavioral observations, record keeping, guest services, public presentations, general facility maintenance and related duties as required. The incumbent may be required to work with or within other zoological departments.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • A bachelor’s degree in zoological science, wildlife management or a related field.
  • A Zoo Technology Program certificate from Alberta Business and Educational Services (ABES) or comparable program would be considered an asset
  • Must possess a valid Manitoba Class 5 Driver’s License.
  • Basic technology and computer skills.
  • A minimum of 2 years performing specialized seasonal labourer - animal care attendant work or 2 years zoo experience in an accredited facility with a good understanding of captive management and behaviors of a wide variety of domestic and wild animals.
  • Previous experience working in teams and dealing with both internal and external customers.
  • Public speaking and/or community speaking experience.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

  • Physically demanding and repetitive tasks.
  • Must be able to perform physically strenuous work outdoors in all types of weather.
  • Combination of sitting, standing, pushing, lifting, kneeling and walking for extended periods.
  • Frequently handling heavy loads of up to 45-50 lbs.
  • Must be able to push/pull 50-250 lbs.
  • N oise exposure from operations , mechanical equipment and animal vocalizations.
  • Exposure to strong scents from animals and chemical products.
  • Contact with plants and animals which may cause allergic reactions.
