Practice Details

The Cardiac Anesthesia Division is actively recruiting a locum physician with a specific focus on supporting care within the Cardiac Surgery Intensive Care Unit (CSICU). This opportunity may be well-suited to an intensivist with interest in cardiac critical care, or to a cardiac anesthesiologist.

The CSICU is a 6-bed unit (with capacity to expand to 8 beds) dedicated to the management of post-cardiac surgery patients. Our program currently performs approximately 600 cardiac surgeries per year, with plans for significant growth to meet rapidly increasing patient demand. The unit manages the full range of adult cardiac surgical patients, including those requiring short-term mechanical support such as V-A ECMO, V-V ECMO, and VAD.

This locum position is intended to provide focused coverage and expertise in the CSICU, complementing the work of our 8-member Cardiac Anesthesia Division. While the Division as a whole provides comprehensive perioperative cardiac anesthesia, TAVI support (150 cases annually), and consultation/TEE for complex non-cardiac cases, this locum role is uniquely dedicated to strengthening our critical care capacity in the CSICU.

We are a group of 44 anesthesiologists providing a full-service tertiary referral service to patients located in a geographical area larger than France. We pride ourselves on being a supportive group who provide the highest quality of care in a complex high acuity environment.

All department members must be fellows of the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada in Anesthesiology, meet the requirements for privileging with our hospital and be able to fulfill call requirements including acute pain services management, out of OR sedation, obstetrics/gynaecology, paediatrics, trauma, urology, orthopaedic, thoracic, vascular, plastic, ENT and general surgery. The successful cardiac anesthesia candidate must have a formal (12 month) fellowship and have achieved TEE certification from the National Board of Echocardiography.

KGH is also a teaching hospital academically affiliated with the University of British Columbia’s Southern Medical Program. As part of your new role you will have the opportunity to teach medical students and residents and make an impact in education and research in the community.

Kelowna General Hospital

Kelowna General Hospital is home to the Interior Heart & Surgical Centre (IHSC) which opened in 2015 and is BC’s only cardiac critical care centre outside of Victoria and the Lower Mainland. IHSC is Kelowna General Hospital’s principal surgical site and features 12 specialized Operating Rooms created for Thoracic, Urology, Neurosurgery, Vascular, Plastics, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Ears Nose and Throat, Orthopedics, General and Trauma surgeries with 2 ORs dedicated to Cardiac Surgery. Within the Interior Heart & Surgical Centre, KGH has a modern maternity ward and adjacent Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. KGH has a dedicated pediatric ward, as well as, adolescent and adult psychiatry units. Enhanced laboratory and clinical departments are found in the new Dr. Walter Anderson Building.
